The Department of Biostatistics within the UW School of Public Health has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist Principal.
The Department of Biostatistics of the University of Washington, through the Center for Biomedical Statistics and the Genetics Analysis Center (GAC), is engaging in an increasing number of analyses of genetic and genomic data, mainly from human population samples. These data sets include whole- genome sets of single nucleotide polymorphism data from microarrays and next-generation sequencing, as well as a variety of phenotypic traits of medical importance. All of these data sets are characterized by large size and complex interaction structure, which requires exceptional analytical, computational and statistical skills. Current projects include the Tans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Data Coordinating Center and the Hispanic Community Health Center / Study of Latinos Genetic Analysis Center. The projects are from academic, non-profit and industrial institutions. The appointee will be expected to provide leadership in the design, analysis and interpretation of statistical genetic projects. Training and experience in statistical genetics is required.
Work with GAC faculty and staff to develop goals and strategies for data analysis and experimental design
Provide leadership for the analyses of specific projects, including coordination of local staff and external investigators
Stay informed about new methods in statistical genetics and apply them appropriately
Program statistical data analysis of large data sets efficiently using parallel computing and other resources
Interpret results; identify potential problems and their solutions
Summarize and communicate results of analyses to GAC staff and clinical collaborators
Prepare results for publications, work with collaborators in writing publications and, in some cases, take the lead in writing publications
Participate in the preparation of grant and contract applications for research funding
Train and evaluate of work of GAC staff (junior data analysts).
Assign tasks, monitor workloads and set priorities.

PhD in Statistical Genetics or closely related field, and six years of experience
Experience in statistical genetics (including publication), work with computational challenges of large and complex data sets, collaborations with multiple investigators, and preparation of grant/contract proposals
Ability to translate complex genetic or medical research questions into statistical questions and analysis strategies.
Ability to detect problems in data or analytic results and find appropriate remedies
Ability to manage projects with multiple collaborators
Computational and programming skills for working with big data
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to write clearly and prepare results for publication
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Project and personnel management in scientific research
Publications in statistical genetics or related area
Experience supervising personnel
