Asst/Assoc/Full Professor - Coastal Dynamics
Requisition Number: FTFR000864
Division/College: College of Science
Location: Marine Science Center at Nahant
Full-time/Part-time: Full Time
As part of its strategic initiative in the area of Urban Coastal Sustainability, Northeastern University seek a faculty candidate in the broad area of coastal dynamics for a tenured or tenure-track appointment at the assistant, associate, or full professor level in the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences and the Marine Science Center, with possible opportunities for a joint position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This position is part of a series of ongoing hires in global change science, coastal ecosystem sustainability, coupled human-natural ecosystems across the land-sea interface, and coastal engineering for sustainability. Northeastern's hiring efforts seek to foster education and research across disciplinary boundaries. Through this hire we aim to create a signature effort at the interface of the built and natural environments that will foster adaptation of urban coastal living to inevitable global change. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a proven ability to sustain a research program with emphasis on interdisciplinary and translational research, teach both undergraduate and graduate classes, and be an active, recognized leader in their discipline.
We are searching broadly for an individual whose research and teaching focuses on the dynamics of coastal systems (including those that are urbanized) and their impacts on ecological processes. Areas of specific interest include but are not limited to cross-ecosystem (land-sea) coupling, sea level rise, computational and environmental fluid mechanics, hydrodynamic model development (e.g., circulation, storm surge, urban flooding), combined riverine-tidal-surge flood modeling in coastal cities, coastal and urban flood risk mitigation and adaptation, coupling of multiple system models (e.g., biological, chemical, ecological and geophysical), and climate or land use change impacts on coastal ecosystems. Researchers developing and applying solutions (e.g., strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts on coastal communities) to facilitate the sustainability of coastal ecosystems, gray/green infrastructure, and societal services are also encouraged to apply.
The ideal applicant will be able to leverage Northeastern's existing expertise and facilities in marine science, coastal ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental sensing, environmental health, water resources, climate analytics and informatics, while bringing new strengths in one or more areas. The expected start date will be Fall 2017.
Candidates must have a PhD in Marine Science, Geoscience or other relevant fields by the beginning of the appointment, as well as a record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with rank. Successful applicants will have the abilities to initiate and lead major funded research projects, to promote innovation in teaching, and to engage with practitioners in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments as well as to promoting experiential learning, which are central to an NEU education.
The laboratory of the successful candidate will be based at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts. Review of applications will commence on December 15, 2016 and continue until the position is filled. Inquiries about the position may be directed to Dr. Geoffrey C. Trussell, Professor and Chair, Marine and Environmental Science, at email@example.com.
