Assistant Director, Earl Warren College Writing Program (Academic Coordinator I- AY /Lecturer)
Earl Warren College at the University of California, San Diego seeks an Academic Coordinator to serve as assistant director of its writing program. Warren College was established in 1974 as the fourth undergraduate college at UC San Diego. Named after the long-serving former California Governor and 14th Chief Justice of the United States, the College continues the legacy of Earl Warren by encouraging students to explore the relationship between leadership and social justice. Warren College students represent all majors offered at UC San Diego, and the college motto, Toward a Life in Balance, is integrated into Warren College's academic requirements and student events to provide a well-rounded university experience. A Ph.D. or terminal graduate degree in a field with significant knowledge of the pedagogy of composition, OR a Ph.D./terminal degree in Composition and Rhetoric with a significant background in literary studies
The Warren College Writing Program (WCWP) Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the program. Duties include: curricular development and pedagogical planning; support, guidance and mentoring of Teaching Assistants, Non-Student Tutors, and Lecturers; periodic visiting of TA sections as appropriate; representing the program on college and university committees; assisting teachers in the program; serving as acting director as needed; and teaching one to three sections of Warren Writing in an academic year.
In association with the Director, the Assistant Director designs and attends the weekly TA meetings, designs and attends the teaching of the fall seminar for new and returning TAs, plans and presents the fall TA orientation, designs and implements program research, and interviews prospective TAs and Lecturers.
This is an academic-year (9-month) appointment which is renewable bi-annually.
Warren College Writing Program courses are designed to encourage the intellectual habits and practices that will give students a solid foundation for success in written and oral communication at the university and beyond. WCWP courses teach students, through intensive practice, to read critically and present academic arguments. These seminar style classes engage students in the scholarly practices necessary for effectively communicating arguments and other ideas. Students receive individual feedback not only from their instructors but also from their peers.

The successful applicant should have:
A record of distinguished teaching in composition or other writing programs at the college level
Formal knowledge of testing/evaluations
Excellent organizational abilities to plan, prioritize and balance multiple projects/tasks
Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
Ability to work effectively and professionally with faculty, staff, and students
Familiarity with web page design and organization, preferred.
Strong demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego's commitment to achieving excellence and diversity
Experience in curricular planning and development
Knowledge of research about how students learn in higher education
Experience in teaching large classes (over 100 students) is especially desirable, as is experience teaching in a research university
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and based on published University of California pay scales.
