The Education Technology and Digital Learning (ETDL) department resides within Information Technology Services at the University of San Francisco. It includes the Center for Instruction and Technology, Classroom Technology, and Digital Education.
The mission of ETDL is to better harness technology to engage and empower the teaching and learning experience. We support USF's teaching and learning goals by providing expertise and services in Instructional Design, Media, Training, and Technology Solutions.
The objectives of the ETDL department are to:
Partner with Academic Leadership to Understand Pedagogical Goals and Challenges
Research and Identify Technologies which fit Faculty and Student Needs
Encourage Adoption and Effective Use of Technologies by leveraging Peer Learning'
Provide Outstanding Customer Support while Striving for Continuous Improvement
The Digital Education team, led by the Associate Director of Digital Education, partners with USF Schools and faculty to develop online and hybrid courses. Services and areas of expertise of the DE team include:
Instructional Design Training & Support
Branded, best practice templates and howto guides
Customized multimedia development (interactive presentations, videos, etc)
ADA and copyright compliance
The Instructional Designer, Digital Education, will work collaboratively with Digital Education team members and program and course stakeholders to foster effective teaching and learning experiences through the integration of learning technologies, pedagogical theory, user experience design, and instructional design.
In partnership with instructors and Program Directors, the Instructional Designer will manage the course design and development process for a suite of new online and hybrid courses each semester, including conducting faculty training and consultation, overseeing the production and integration of multimedia course content, such as graphics, audio, video, and multimedia presentations to meet stakeholder goals and objectives. The Instructional Designer will provide guidance to instructors in serving the instructional needs of diverse learners through the application of pedagogical theory and instructional design.
The Instructional Designer will also maintain University standards for online learning pedagogy, educational technologies, instructional design procedures, regulatory requirements, and faculty and staff training and support in the course development process.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Work with Program Directors to establish customized course quality and design standards for courses in a program.
Partner with instructors to design and develop courses using researchbased instructional design and pedagogical principles and which are reflective of instructor and Program Director objectives.
Project manage the course development process to ensure ontime delivery of courses, including conducting weekly consultations with faculty.
Coordinate and contribute to the planning and development of customized audio/video and other multimedia course content.
Lead postproduction reviews to evaluate course quality and identify opportunities for future improvements.
Conduct group and 1:1 faculty development sessions in instructional design and online and hybrid teaching.
Stay current on instructional design, online and hybrid learning, and educational technology trends and issues.
Design, develop and publish training materials and howto guides for faculty.
Master's degree in Teaching, Instructional Design and Technology, Curriculum Development or related field.
3+ years experience in developing online and hybrid learning experiences and courses.
Experience in webbased course development and support, including experience using a
learning management system, digital media, and other related technologies.
Knowledge of effective pedagogical/andragogical theories and instructional design
methodologies for online and hybrid learning.
Experience teaching in a K12 or university/college context; Online teaching experience
Knowledge and Skills
Proficiency in developing engaging online learning activities and content.
Thorough knowledge of appropriate pedagogy, andragogy and instructional design
Proficiency in the use of LMS functionality, reporting, and course management;
Knowledge of the Canvas LMS a plus.
Multimedia preproduction, production and postproduction skills.
Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs (particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
Proficiency in utilizing industryleading learning technologies and content providers such
as Camtasia, Zoom, Qualtrics, PollEverywhere and Lynda.com to create engaging
student learning experiences.
Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and familiarity with WCAG
2.0 guidelines and law governing Universities with regards to accessibility.
Excellent written and oral communication skills with a strong command of the English
Ability to manage projects in a highly organized fashion and with a high attention to
Ability to foster cooperation and work collaboratively with others.
Ability to accept feedback and constructive evaluation of work.
Thorough knowledge of issues and trends in online and hybrid higher education and/or a
specialized academic discipline or field.
