Clinical Informatics and Translational Bioinformatics/Clinical Research Informatics
The Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education (BIME) at the University of Washington (UW) is looking for three full-time faculty at the Assistant Professor Without Tenure (Job Code 0113) or Associate Professor Without Tenure (Job Code 0112) on a 12-month service period to a) expand our basic and applied biomedical informatics research program (approximately 80% effort) and b) to collaborate with the faculty serving as Chief Research Information Officer and Chief Analytics Officer to play an informatics service/practice role in the domains of clinical informatics and/or translational bioinformatics (TBI) and/or clinical research informatics(CRI) (approximately 20% effort).
We are seeking exceptional candidates who have documented research experience relevant to clinical informatics, translational bioinformatics, or clinical research informatics. Relevant foundational and applied research experience includes but is not limited to:
- Database research, data integration, data modeling
- Knowledge representation/ontologies
- Data visualization, human-computer interaction
- Text mining and natural language processing
- Predictive analytics, decision support analytics, pattern recognition
- Data security, Honest Broker systems, systems evaluation
- Secondary use of EHR data, EHR data for phenotyping, data warehousing
- Clinical trial management, biorepository systems, research data warehouses
- Clinical decision support, clinical systems, electronic health records
- Translational bioinformatics
Prior experience in informatics practice/service capacities related to the above is a highly welcomed attribute (e.g. deploying production clinical or research informatics systems in a clinical or translational environment). Experience mentoring and/or teaching MS, PhD and postdoc students in the biomedical informatics domain is a welcomed attribute though the positions do not have required teaching responsibilities. Other welcomed attributes include strong computing expertise, and a demonstrable history of inter-professional collaboration spanning discovery to application in particular including clinician collaborators.
New faculty will join the numerous other BIME faculty, graduate students, and ~75 UW staff who are working on the spectrum of foundational, applied and operational aspects of clinical informatics and TBI/CRI. The scope of clinical and analytics resources includes: a) Cerner electronic medical record (inpatient) and Epic electronic medical record (outpatient) deployed across 4 hospitals and affiliated clinics and a primary care clinic network, b) a Clarity data warehousing group extracting data from the Epic systems, d) a Clarity/Business Objects reporting group, c) a decision support/analytics group using the McKesson system, e) a warehousing/reporting group using the Caradigm Amalga data repository, f) an Accountable Care Organization reporting team, g) multiple grants in the comparative effectiveness research and Learning Healthcare System domains. The scope of CRI/TBI includes: a) the local CTSA informatics core, b) a research informatics consult service, c) secondary use of EHR data for research including phenotyping (using data repositories from analytics above plus i2b2 instances), d) electronic data capture (REDCap), e) biospecimen acquisition system, f) expanding precision medicine informatics infrastructure, g) acquiring and implementing a Clinical Trial Management System, h) universal consent and consent management. These positions are part of a broader recruitment effort within the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education which includes recruitment of faculty at multiple ranks in the areas of Analytics, Clinical Informatics, Clinical Research Informatics, Genomic Medicine/Translational Bioinformatics, and expansion of an ACGME accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship program.
University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The department is seeking multidisciplinary faculty with backgrounds in foundational and/or applied biomedical informatics research who are interested in scholarship, teaching and practice in a highly collaborative academic setting. Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in a relevant discipline or an M.D. (or foreign equivalent) with relevant significant formal biomedical informatics related training, scholarship and practice. MD Practitioners will be appointed to the appropriate clinical department with a joint appointment in BIME. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B Visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The BIME Department consists of 32 core faculty and 57 extended faculty representing 24 departments across the University engaged in a broad range of foundational and applied biomedical informatics research, as well as scholarship and practice activities around medical education. In addition to an active informatics research program, the Department faculty are responsible for the operation, evaluation and refinement of the Biomedical Informatics research training programs (MS, PhD, Postdoc with currently 64 trainees), the NIH NLM informatics research training grant, and the joint (with School of Nursing) applied MS in Clinical Informatics and Patient Centered Technologies (CIPCT, currently 55 active students). The CIPCT program is a fully on-line program that serves as didactic foundation of our clinical informatics fellowship. Where appropriate, our faculty aim to translate our foundational and applied scholarship into practice at the UW and partner institutions within our operational clinical and research computing groups. It is expected that new faculty will engage in a similar range of activities including informatics research, teaching, and the practice of analytics and/or clinical informatics and/or clinical research informatics and/or translational bioinformatics.
