Purpose of Position:
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry & innovation (iCubed), and the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs seeks applicants for a full-time, tenure-eligible position in the Oral Health in Childhood and Adolescence Transdisciplinary Core. The chief purpose of the core is to identify and remove the educational, political, psychological, social and nutritional barriers to the prevention and treatment of dental caries (tooth decay) in the children and adolescents of Richmond. The core will promote teamwork toward innovative solutions for improving oral and overall health outcomes. This core also will provide a rich environment for the recruitment and engagement of diverse and underrepresented faculty and students to work and learn through solving oral health problems that disproportionately affect underserved populations.
The tenure-eligible faculty member will join the Oral Health in Childhood and Adolescence Core. They will focus on the structural barriers to children and adolescents seeking and receiving oral health care in the City of Richmond. They will serve as a subject matter expert and will contribute at least 75% of their effort to this core. They will effectively collaborate with the core and its community partners and will contribute towards the successful definition and achievement of core goals.
The faculty member will have a primary appointment in the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. Affiliate appointments with the other core-related academic units and community organizations will be encouraged and supported.
The faculty member will demonstrate commitment to human diversity and social justice, with the ability to advance the university's commitment to diversity and multiculturalism through community-engaged research, teaching and outreach with relevant programs, goals and activities.
The faculty member will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the professional, and graduate level, creation of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. The faculty will demonstrate leadership in developing techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
The faculty member will have an academic record likely to produce success in the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. That includes an established research agenda, a clear potential for external funding and publication in high-impact journals, and potential for scholarship to complement and expand existing expertise in the School.
The faculty member will broaden participation among members of under-represented groups. They will demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience and will integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research tools.
Required Qualifications: PhD in public administration, urban planning, criminal justice, economics, or a
related field by August 2017
Experience and expertise in policy analysis focused on organizations, communities, schools and local government, particularly in relation to public and community health issues
An established research agenda to the level of assistant professors, and a clear potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department; or, an established research / scholarship portfolio commensurate to the level of associate professor, as evidenced by high impact publications, external funding, and multidisciplinary application to underrepresented ethnic minorities.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in the application of econometrics in the core areas of interest
Experience and expertise in the analysis of macro policy focused on organizations, communities, schools and local government, particular in relation to public and community health issues
Academic, research and/or professional experiences at urban research universities.
Experiential learning through lived experiences and/or professional service that inform worldviews and/or perspectives about minority group status, to include race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability.
