Purpose of Position:
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry & innovation (iCubed), and the Departments of Psychology, Health Behavior and Policy, and Occupational Therapy seek applicants for multiple positions to join the Culture, Race and Health Transdisciplinary Core. The chief purpose of the core is to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities within local health districts using community-engaged research and activities. This core will address how culture and race / ethnicity impacts health and overall well-being, particularly among populations in the greater Richmond Virginia experiencing health disparities. This core also will engage in collaborative team science to understand the mechanisms underlying health disparities, and develop culturally informed programs and interventions in collaboration with community members and likely to reduce disparities.
The tenure-eligible faculty member will join the Culture, Race and Health Transdisciplinary Core and contribute at least 75% of their effort to this core. They will collaborate with other core faculty and community partners and will contribute towards the successful definition and achievement of core goals. They will be immersed in activities related to improving health equities through research, teaching, and service and will join a leadership team of five faculty and community members with demonstrated commitment to improving health equalities for underrepresented minorities.
The faculty member will have a primary appointment in the Department of Psychology and will contribute to one of the department's doctoral programs in health, counseling, clinical, or general psychology. The faculty will hold an affiliate appointment with the Department of Health Behavior and Policy in the School of Medicine and an affiliation with the Department of Occupational Therapy in the School of Allied Health Professions will be encouraged and supported.
The faculty member will teach graduate an undergraduate course in areas of specialization and train doctoral students in areas related to health disparities, community-engaged research, culture, race / ethnicity and health. S/he will share a deep commitment to effective instruction, creation of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, community engagement, and professional development. S/he will demonstrate leadership in developing techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and will integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods.
The faculty member will contribute to VCU's national reputation through research and scholarship (extramural funding, high impact publications, citations, and national recognition) and maintain active involvement in national or international organizations and bodies.
The faculty member will broaden participation among members of underrepresented groups. They will demonstrate through research, teaching, and / or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience and research tools.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in psychology or a closely related field
Established research / scholarship portfolio commensurate to the level of associate professor, as evidenced by high impact publications, and external funding,
Effective experience (e.g., research, teaching, service) with underrepresented ethnic minority populations
Strong interest and / or demonstrated commitment working within a transdisciplinary team in areas related to health disparities, culture and health, community-engaged research, intervention science, and / or program evaluation.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment.
Preferred Qualifications: Academic, research and / or professional experiences with urban and other underserved populations
Experiential learning through lived experiences and/or professional service that inform worldviews and/or perspectives about minority group status, to include race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability
