Purpose of Position:
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the Institute for Inclusion, Inquiry & innovation (iCubed), and the School of Social Work seek applicants for a full-time, non-tenure eligible position in the Oral Health in Childhood and Adolescence Transdisciplinary Core. The chief purpose of the core is to identify and remove the educational, political, psychological, social and nutritional barriers to the prevention and treatment of dental caries (tooth decay) in the children and adolescents of Richmond. The core will promote teamwork toward innovative solutions for improving oral and overall health outcomes. This core also will provide a rich environment for the recruitment and engagement of diverse and underrepresented faculty and students to work and learn through solving oral health problems that disproportionately affect underserved populations.
The faculty member will join the Oral Health in Childhood and Adolescence Core and will contribute 75% of their effort to the core. They will effectively collaborate with the core and its community partners and will contribute towards the successful definition and achievement of core goals.
The faculty member will understand and respond to barriers to oral health among residents in urban areas, including the provision of clinical services to children, adolescents, and their families in screening for oral health needs and case management to access appropriate oral health care in the community.
The faculty member also will have instructional duties with social work undergraduate and graduate interns and other duties related to the educational mission of the School of Social Work. They will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the professional, and graduate level, creation of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. The faculty will demonstrate leadership in developing techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
The faculty member will possess an interest in community-based participatory action, clinical trial research, and process and outcome evaluation related to the core's mission. They will possess the skills needed to appropriately develop and coordinate screening and case management services for the oral health needs of children and adolescents, supervise and train student interns, as well as engage in projects related to the core.
The faculty member will broaden participation among members of under-represented groups. They will demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience and will integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research tools
Master of Social Work degree
A minimum of 2 years' experience post-graduate professional social work practice in healthcare settings
Demonstrated ability to supervise and train student interns
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required.
Clinical social work licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Academic, research and / or professional experiences with urban and other underserved populations
Experiential learning through lived experiences and/or professional service that inform worldviews and/or perspectives about minority group status, to include race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, and disability.
