Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Division of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for qualified Postdoctoral Research candidates to fill anticipated vacancies within 2016. All positions require completion of the Ph.D. degree prior to the appointment. Candidates with expertise related to the following areas are encouraged to apply:
Materials Evaluation & System Development – design, construction, and operation of a system for in situ process monitoring and control, including system engineering, materials processing and instrumentation. Experience in rapid solidification, gas atomization and additive manufacturing are preferred.
Materials Development – experimental design of materials and alloys for additive manufacturing, including effects of processing on composition and resulting microstructure.
Development, synthesis, processing, and characterization of physical properties of intermetallics that exhibit strong responsiveness to changes in temperature, pressure, and magnetic field.
Strong background in characterizations of materials using XRD, SEM and TEM.
Numerical simulations with existing in-house CFD codes of fluid atomization as well as further develop the code to include additional physics. Experience in compressible multiphase flow, interfacial flows with surface tension, HLLC and Reimann solvers, and reconstruction techniques for finite volume methods is highly desired.
Required Education and Experience:
Ph.D. must be completed prior to appointment.
