The University of Washington Police Department (UWPD) is committed to involving the community in solving crime problems through community policing practices and keeping the community educated as to safe practices to protect yourself and your property. This also requires a commitment from the community in helping us by taking responsibility in reporting crimes, suspicious activities, and practicing good and practical crime prevention techniques.
As an agency of the university community, UWPD provides law enforcement to the largest college and stadium in Washington State. It also provides security to visiting dignitaries and during demonstrations. The Police Department serves a vital role in the safety, security, and success of the University of Washington. Its purpose is to serve and protect the students, staff, faculty and all people and property within the jurisdiction of that community.
Police officers and personnel are on duty 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and their services and facilities are available at all times. The University Police department has the exclusive responsibility to act upon law-enforcement matters and perform police functions for the main campus of the University of Washington, Seattle.
The UWPD supports the University's academic and research Mission by protecting the life and property of our citizens and visitors. Our Vision is that the University is a diverse and ever-changing community. This requires constant efforts by the Police Department to partner with and educate the community to deter, reduce and solve crimes, and to resolve issues through modern policing. This will be accomplished through:
a) strengthening our partnership with the community through community-oriented policing practices;
b) achieving operational excellence through improving efficiency in operations and aligning services with resources; and
c) pursuing innovation through the responsible use of current technology.
UWPD has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time Security Guard to support the Seattle campus. Security Guards may be assigned to the Husky NightWalk Program as well as assigned to support other programs and posts to include the UW Tower.
Husky NightWalk Program
The purpose of the Husky NightWalk Program is to enhance the safety of personnel at the University of Washington by providing walking escorts to designated areas on campus. Security Guards also facilitate the overall security of the campus by conducting regular foot patrols of campus buildings and providing general security services at other locations on campus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Upon client request:
Perform duties primarily on foot; may operate University vehicle as needed.
Escort requestor (University faculty, staff, students, guests) to various locations on campus during the designated times.
All drivers will adhere to the Washington State Traffic Laws at all times while on duty and operating a University vehicle.
During an escort, if a medical emergency develops, the guard is to request Seattle Fire Medics to their location. The guard shall also administer first-aid to the victim if properly trained to do so.
Security Guards conducting escorts shall avoid any confrontational situations with other persons and shall request a police officer presence to their location immediately if such a situation occurs.
Security Guards shall advise UWPD dispatch (via radio) whenever they observe suspected criminal activity and/or suspicious circumstances. Security Guards are not to engage in use of force tactics unless an extreme situation (i.e., protect self or others from bodily harm) occurs.
Security Guard Duties and Responsibilities
Security Guards shall perform the following duties (including those assigned to NightWalk when not providing escort assistance):
Roving patrols of buildings, parking lots/garages and bike racks for criminal and/or suspicious activity
Building and vehicle admits
Building checks and sweeps
Special security details as assigned
Other specified functions determined by the on-duty supervisor

UWPD is very proud to be one of only 15 police agencies in Washington that has achieved national accreditation. Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the law enforcement accreditation program requires agencies to comply with over 400 standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

Additional requirements include:
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills to include being clearly understandable via radio communication transmissions as well as the ability to maintain records clearly and legibly
Excellent customer services skills to include the ability to interface professionally with a diverse community
Good analytical and observation skills
Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making
Ability to operate under stressful situations (to include contacting uncooperative individuals who are in or approaching unauthorized areas), while maintaining composure in dealing with executives, clients, staff, authorities and the public, occasionally under conditions of urgency and in pressure situations
Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as in a teamwork atmosphere
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
Basic computer skills
Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently
Ability to adapt to changes in the external environment to include being exposed to inclement weather and work in environments or under conditions that require the use of protective gear and devices and/or awareness of personal safety and safety of others
First Aid and CPR certified (or ability to obtain certifications upon hire) and maintain certifications
Flexible and available to work night shifts as assigned to include weekends;
Flexible and available to work overtime with little/no advance notice
Must be First Aid and CPR certified (or ability to obtain certifications upon hire) and maintain certifications
Must be comfortable working in and patrolling a high rise building
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Driving history for the past three years shall not exhibit a pattern of unsafe driving habits, nor have convictions for Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, or Driving under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs.
Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
