The Rutgers School of Health Professions – Physician Assistant (PA) Program seeks to hire a full-time PA to join a new faculty practice in neurosurgery.
The position involves clinical and educational responsibilities. The PA will primarily be responsible for the care of patients in Department of Neurosurgery at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The PA will coordinate and perform pre-operative assessments, act as first assist in the operating room, develop and implement treatment plans and provide post-operative care. The PA may also be expected to evaluate and treat patients in the outpatient setting, provide non-operative care and perform neurosurgical assessments and procedures in the emergency department as necessary. Principal clinical and educational responsibilities are listed below.
The qualified candidate will receive a faculty appointment in the Rutgers School of Health Professions. As such, the PA will participate in teaching activities, deliver didactic content and perform student assessments as necessary. Educational activities may occasionally require travel to the Rutgers PA Program in Piscataway, NJ.

Principal responsibilities: The PA is expected to:
Perform initial pre-operative assessment of patients.
Perform a detailed medical history and comprehensive physical exam.
Order, interpret and perform diagnostic studies, consultations and procedures as necessary.
First-assist in surgeries.
Manage post-operative patients in the inpatient setting.
Prepare patients for discharge, including patient and family discharge teaching, continuing care and rehabilitation arrangements, writing discharge prescriptions and confirming follow-up.
Perform or assist with neurosurgical consultations and procedures in the emergency department.
Perform follow-up examinations of post-operative patients in the outpatient setting.
Provide night and weekend coverage for the orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery services according to the call schedule.
Act as a clinical preceptor for Rutgers University PA students
Provide lectures and participate in teaching activities for the Rutgers University PA Program as necessary.
Minimum Education and Experience:
The qualified candidate will possess a Master's Degree or higher and will have graduated from a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The qualified candidate will possess current certification from the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and a New Jersey Physician Assistant license issued by the NJ Board of Medical Examiners. Prior orthopedic surgery experience is preferred but not required.
