Harborview Medical Center's Pioneer Square Clinic has an outstanding opportunity for a Part-Time 60% MEDICAL ASSISTANT position. Looking for a Medical Assistant interested in working with homeless patients in a downtown shelter medical clinic. Must be comfortable working with patients who have behavioral conditions.
Pioneer Square Clinic, located downtown, provides primary health care and treats acute problems for adult patients residing in downtown Seattle. The Medical Assistant will be working in a fast-paced satellite clinic of Harborview Medical Center, which offers the following services:
An on-site pharmacy, managed by Harborview, fills prescriptions by clinic providers. The clinic does not keep cash or stock narcotics.
A podiatry, or foot care, clinic takes place weekly, staffed by a doctor of podiatry.
A social worker helps patients access community services and resources and assists in resolving problems that interfere with patients' access to health care.
A patient care coordinator helps with referrals to specialty services, health insurance and other needs.
Psychiatrists are on-site and available for care.
A dietitian consults twice weekly.
Health education is available for many conditions, either in the clinic or through the Harborview Patient and Family Resource Center.
UW Medicine's specialty services and hospitalization are available to patients, if needed.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant [MA] will assist the medical and nursing staff by performing delegated tasks that involve direct patient care; technical procedures or monitoring that may be invasive and require skills validations; transportation of patients, supplies and specimens; ordering and stocking of supplies; and maintenance of special equipment, including sterile equipment and set-ups. The MA role may include coordinating the clerical activities and supporting front desk activities for patient care in the clinic. Participates in clinic and selected divisional activities to promote effective problem-solving and communication.
CLINIC FLOW ACTIVITIES:
Ensure exam rooms are stocked, clean and ready for patients.
Maintain and use supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
Prepare medical record for clinic visit. Verify presence of medical records and diagnostic testing (lab work and images) prior to scheduled appointments, requesting existing records and x-rays as necessary.
Assist provider by facilitating use of technology including EMR (electronic medical records) and PACS (electronic imaging).
Coordinate communication flow in the clinic including answering and directing telephone inquiries to the appropriate individual.
Provide basic telephone screening per clinic protocols and recognize emergent/urgent problems and direct to the ARNP..
Coordinate clerical patient care activities and/or specialized technical duties unique to the assigned clinic to ensure accurate and expedited patient check-in and discharge, including obtaining consents for care and referral information. Coordinate all check-in issues with Pioneer Square Clinic front desk staff.
Take initiative to maintain patient flow for assigned ARNP.
Walk patients and lab specimens to Pioneer Square Clinic as needed.
Complete billing documents as appropriate.
Schedule appointments for patients.
PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES:
Prepare patient for examination by the provider. Observe and document the patient's physical and emotional condition and vital signs in the medical record, recognize and report symptoms of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse.
Perform delegated patient care activities/education in accordance with established standards of practice.
Assist during patient examinations and procedures performed by the ARNP.
Perform procedures including ear irrigation, urethral catheterization, and sterile dressing changes.
Will withdraw venous blood and capillary blood.
Will give injectable medications that have been registered with the WA State Department of Health.
De-escalate patients as needed [receive de-escalation training in orientation].
Unique duties include milieu management (interacting with patients and redirecting).
CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TEAM BEHAVIORS
Greet patients and families.
Review patient needs with providers daily, preferably at the start of each day or session.
Advocate for the patient/family by locating appropriate staff to address concerns
Demonstrate an atmosphere/attitude of respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of each person encountered in the clinic setting.
Promote and protect general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers through adherence to correct procedures, timely communication of messages and test results, and appropriate consultation.
Act promptly and effectively during an emergency situation.
Communicate effectively with case managers from DESC and their Psychiatric staff.
Maintain/improve own professional competence, knowledge and skills to meet identified self-learning needs and annual review requirements.
Apply appropriate policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice in performing duties.
Support development of clinic and divisional efficiency and effectiveness through participation in quality assessment and improvement activities.
Demonstrate support for clinic and divisional policies and procedures.
Promote and contribute to the development of team in clinic and working relationships between the clinic and other departments/disciplines.
Participate in orientation of new staff and preceptorship of MA students.
