Purpose of Position:
This position is a tenure-eligible nine-month faculty position in Theatre History, Theory, Criticism and Dramatic Literature at the academic rank of Assistant of Associate Professor. This position will have graduate teaching responsibilities in the areas of Theatre History, Theory, Criticism and Dramatic Literature and may oversee faculty teaching the same area of expertise on the undergraduate level. This person will also supervise and administer the MFA Program in Theater. This position will take an active role in mentoring students; service to the school and department; service on university committees as designated by the chair; and work collaboratively with theatre faculty, students and guest artists. This faculty member’s scholarly and creative activity should make a contribution to a body of knowledge within the discipline(s) of Theatre History, Theory, Criticism or Dramatic Literature, as it relates to the Theatre curriculum and reflect a high standard of quality of competence while being consistent with and supporting the mission and initiatives of the Department, School, and University.
The faculty member will develop and teach core classes in Theatre History, Historiography, Pedagogy, Theory and Criticism, Dramatic Literature, and Dramaturgy, and will guide and oversee graduate students as they work towards completion of the MFA requirements. This will include teaching courses in fall and spring semesters, including THEA 699 and THEA 799: Creative Projects and Thesis; conducting thesis meetings; reviewing deadlines for submissions of thesis proposals for the department; and ensuring students meet deadlines for submission of final thesis documents to the university. Courses taught could change based on demand, and will be at the discretion of the Chair.
Research expectations include scholarly and creative activity that make a contribution to a body of knowledge within a related theatre discipline, reflect a high standard of quality of competence, and demonstrate excellence in the field. The faculty member will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as appropriate, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. If hired at the Associate professor level, the faculty member will be required to have a well-developed scholarly portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department.
Faculty member will serve on departmental, school, and university committees and is expected to maintain professional service in their field, (e.g. reviewer, presenter at professional conferences, etc.).
As the director of graduate studies for the department, the faculty member will be expected to foster and disseminate compelling ideas concerning the nature and future of theatre as an art form. Under the direction of the Chair, responsibilities related to oversight of the MFA program will include: understanding and administering the policies and procedures of the VCU Graduate School; advocating for the needs of the graduate program and its students; recruiting new students to the program, especially those underrepresented in the field; graduate admissions and pre-admissions advising; coordinating graduate assistantships and other student support; serving as a member of the School's Graduate Studies Committee; mentoring and advising current graduate students; supporting accreditation and curriculum development; contributing to the coordination of student activities and special events; appointing graduate committee members and thesis committee members; and other duties as assigned by the Chair.
Required Qualifications:PhD in a related Theatre discipline;
A strong record of teaching at the graduate level; minimum of four years of experience required;
Notable record of scholarly accomplishment disseminated through well regarded channels;
Applicants must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:Appropriate administrative experience;
Active membership in national professional organizations.
