Department: Painting & Printmaking
Purpose of Position:
This position is a 12-month, senior-level, tenure-eligible faculty position that will lead the Department of Painting + Printmaking as Chairperson. The Chairperson will oversee and perform a portfolio of administrative business and fiscal operations for the department; facilitate group processes; effectively advocate on behalf of the department and the discipline; successfully seek internal and external funding; and be visionary. The Chairperson will be committed to enhancing the diversity among faculty, staff, and students in the department.
The Chairperson will be a key figure in defining and refining the vision for the department, and be an effective and equitable administrator and an enthusiastic contributor, facilitator and director.
Position Responsibilities: Teaching in his/her area of expertise will be expected, providing a forum for direct interaction with students in creative/academic contexts, affording opportunities to model scholarship within the department;
Maintain an active studio practice;
Build collaborative relationships across all university departments, while being flexible and able to work in a team environment with the potential to develop new strategies for programming;
Articulate a vision for the department;
Serve as an advocate for faculty, students, and the fields of painting and printmaking;
Promote excellence in teaching, creativity, research, and community engagement;
Thoughtfully inspire and evaluate faculty in the areas of teaching, research and service, including mentoring new and current faculty and guiding faculty through the promotion and tenure process;
Oversight for all areas of department administration, to include finance, recruitment and admissions, course scheduling, personnel, facilities and equipment; and other duties as assigned;
Engage nationally and internationally with alumni;
Collaboration with the School's admissions team including the execution of a national recruitment plan.
Required Qualifications: A significant national or international exhibition record and/or scholarly resume;
MFA or equivalent is required;
A minimum of five years teaching experience plus administrative experience is preferred;
Demonstrated competence in creating a trusting and inclusive culture, experience recruiting, hiring, and retaining under-represented faculty and staff, and leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion among all students, faculty and staff;
Proven administrative skills;
The Chair will have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU;
The Chair must have a well-developed scholarly, creative or professional portfolio with the potential for multi-disciplinary applications and interest in developing external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department;
Experience developing and leading in a highly ambitious and collegial team environment;
Excellent time management and communication skills; adept at speaking to large audiences.
