Purpose of Position:
This is a full-time 9-month tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Graphic Design with an academic rank of Assistant Professor. The faculty member must have a strong record of teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, and will have teaching responsibilities, including undergraduate and graduate courses each semester, that support the program's curriculum. The faculty member's creative research responsibilities will entail establishing and growing a robust research agenda as a passionate practitioner who models curiosity and rigorous optimistic engagement to students and fellow faculty. Additionally, the faculty member will have a thorough record of meaningfully disseminating work through well regarded channels. The faculty member will serve on Departmental, School, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, and perform additional service as assigned by the Chair.
The faculty member will effectively collaborate with faculty peers and community partners and will be committed to working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment as a faculty member at VCU. In addition, the faculty member will broaden participation among members of underrepresented groups, and demonstrate through research, teaching, and / or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience and will integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research tools.
Teaching responsibilities include a deep commitment to effectively teaching design methodologies and theories of making and thinking to undergraduate and graduate students. The ability to relate contemporary tendencies in design practice to historical, theoretical and critical issues is essential.
An aptitude for exploring the continuity between analog and digital contexts and bolstering the department's culture of energetic engagement, as well as leadership in developing techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests is also essential.
This position will have teaching responsibilities, including undergraduate and graduate courses each semester, that support the program's curriculum. Courses taught will change as demand requires and will be at the discretion of the Chair.
The faculty member will contribute to VCU's national reputation through scholarly and creative activity that should make a contribution to a body of knowledge within design and reflect a high standard of quality and competence. To this end, the faculty member will actively disseminate creative engagement in design research nationally and internationally.
The faculty member will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as appropriate, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. The faculty member’s scholarly and creative activity should be consistent with, and support, the mission and initiatives of the Department, School, and University.
The faculty member will serve on Departmental, School, and University committees as necessary, and designated by the Chair, as well as in a professional capacity in their field. The faculty member could also have additional responsibilities which might include mentoring graduate and/or undergraduate students, coordinating student activities, overseeing a department program and/or lab and support on-going curriculum development. The faculty member will maintain active involvement in national or international organizations and bodies. Engagement with community is strongly supported.
Required Qualifications: Terminal degree in design or design related field;
Strong record of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level;
Thorough record of meaningfully disseminating work through well regarded channels;
Well-versed in the concepts driving graphic design research, critique and speculative production, as well as the ability to relate contemporary tendencies in design practice to historical, theoretical and critical issues;
Must be a passionate practitioner who models curiosity and rigorous optimistic engagement to students and fellow faculty;
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrable interest in developing productive connections across creative disciplines;
Academic, research and/or professional experiences at urban research universities, Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) or Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
