| Posting Summary: The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia seeks to fill a tenure-track, junior faculty position in leadership and public policy with a start date in Fall 2017. We invite applications from candidates who have earned their doctorate in social psychology, management/organizational behavior, or decision sciences. We are open to scholars who have basic or translational research interests in a wide range of substantive areas, including but not limited to: attitudes and persuasion; conflict resolution and negotiation; group behavior; judgment and decision making; prejudice and discrimination; prosocial behavior; relationships; self and social identity; self regulation; social cognition; and social influence.|
One of the signatures of the Batten School is an emphasis on social psychology as it applies, broadly speaking, to issues of public policy and leadership. (There are currently three social psychologists on the faculty, with plans to continue building in this area.) Successful applicants should have a well-defined area of research with an active record of publication. Whatever the candidate's area of specialization, the research program should have or demonstrate the potential to have implications for public policy and/or leadership, broadly construed. Public policy implications might relate to issues such as poverty, inequality, crime, science and technology, environment, politics, education, or health care. Leadership implications might relate to core leadership skills such as negotiation, persuasion, social influence, group dynamics, or conflict resolution. Preference will be given to candidates who aim to conduct research that makes theoretical and practical contributions in their area of interest.
Successful candidates must have the desire and ability to teach courses on leadership and public policy at the undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MPP) levels. Relevant courses in the curriculum focus on applying behavioral science principles to policy-making and/or leadership challenges. We aim to cultivate the mindsets and build the skills necessary for students to become effective civic leaders and behaviorally informed policy makers.
Built upon the strong foundation of one of the nation's top public universities, the Batten School combines rigorous training in policy analysis with a unique emphasis on the acquisition of leadership skills. The research faculty includes psychologists, economists, and political scientists, and is enriched by professors of practice who bring real-world policymaking expertise to the classroom. The School currently offers an MPP degree and an undergraduate major in public policy and leadership, as well as multiple dual degree programs with other units at U.Va.. Given the interdisciplinary nature of this position, the successful candidate would have the potential for a joint or secondary appointment with other academic units at U.Va.
