Purpose of Position:
This position follows professional best practices in library science and user experience to create a compelling VCU Libraries web presence which will further the VCU research, educational, and clinical care mission. This position contributes to the VCU Libraries organizational needs by not only supporting VCU students, faculty, and researchers, but also serves as a primary contact within the VCU Libraries for staff who are developing online tools for the community.
Reporting to Head of Digital Engagement, the Web Systems Librarian will lead strategy for the online library experience through professional vision and innovation. The successful candidate will work closely with team members, the Digital Engagement Department, library staff, professional colleagues, and vendors to deliver online library services to the VCU community. The Web Systems Librarian will have a leadership role in shaping the VCU Libraries’ website, Primo discovery interface, digital collections, and other digital projects. The Web Systems Librarian will be responsible for exploring new technologies and identifying opportunities for their effective application, including integration with other university, library, social media, and third-party systems. As a faculty member of the newly formed Scholarly Communications and Publishing Division, the Web Systems Librarian will actively contribute to the division's overall objectives, engaging in projects and activities that further these goals. The successful candidate will provide occasional on-call and planned maintenance support. The Web Systems Librarian is expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Faculty with the VCU Libraries are evaluated, and promoted, on the basis of job performance, scholarship, and professional development and service.
ALA accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of technical and non-technical clients and staff. Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and time management skills. Ability to learn and apply new technologies independently. Ability to work successfully with external vendor support and documentation. Availability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays. Willingness to cooperate and share information with peers. Strong service orientation. Ability to bring new ideas and concepts to current practice. Interest in developing new skills through continuing education opportunities.
Although experience in certain areas is desirable, this is an entry-level position in which candidates who demonstrate excellent promise and a passion for creating superior library web user experiences and robust, stable systems will be given the most serious consideration.
