Purpose of Position:
The position is a 9-month non-tenure eligible faculty at the Instructor level. The position is based in the Department of Sculpture + Extended Media and will support the needs of undergraduate level teaching, and oversee the academic, instructional, and safety needs of the students using the department's computer lab, AV checkout, and digital fabrication equipment. The successful candidate will work in tandem with a dedicated Sculpture Shop Technician to oversee the day-to-day operation and upkeep of these facilities, including purchasing/receiving and managing student workers, and communicating with VCUarts IT to maintain software requirements and the condition of computers. The faculty member's skills and interests will complement and expand the existing expertise of the faculty and staff in the department.
Teaching responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in the Department of Sculpture + Extended Media in the faculty member's area of expertise to support the curriculum requirements of the program. Courses taught will change as demand requires and will be at the discretion of the Chair.
The faculty member's scholarly and creative activity should make a contribution to a body of knowledge within the disciplines of art and/or design as it relates to the Sculpture + Extended Media curriculum and reflect a high standard of quality of competence.
The faculty member may participate in School of the Arts recruitment and admission activities, as designated by the Chair. The faculty member may coordinate supplemental educational activities like workshops, special programming and other duties as assigned, etc., as determined by the Chair.
The faculty member will oversee the academic, instructional, and safety needs of the students using the department's computer lab and digital fabrication equipment. The faculty member will instruct students and faculty on the proper and safe use of complex equipment, machines, and procedures in the multiple digital areas, and will collaborate with other faculty on methods to incorporate and utilize digital technology in the departmental curriculum, both in the undergraduate and graduate programs.
Required Qualifications:MFA and/or equivalent training and professional experience.
Minimum 1 year teaching experience.
Fluency in software including Adobe Creative Suite, including video.
Experience operating CNC equipment and 3D modeling (Rhino) and 3D printing.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience beyond graduate school teaching at the University level.
Experience teaching in a fine arts program.
Experience with non-Adobe software Geomagic, Final Cut X, Reaper, Windows, etc.
Experience working in a woodshop, metal shop, mold making area, and/or foundry and familiarity with the related equipment and safety protocol.
