Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervises the daily operations of a functional or service unit within the university libraries.
Supervises clerical staff in the daily operations of the unit, to include hiring, discipline, training, and performance appraisals.
Plans and coordinates work schedules and distribution of work assignments within the unit.
Oversees the daily operations of the unit, including budget oversight, maintenance of supplies inventory and resolution of problems.
May communicate with vendors, publishers and subject librarians regarding orders, invoices, receipts or current holdings.
May provide reference and information services to library patrons as needed.
Prepares regular and ad hoc reports on unit activities as required.
Coordinates or participates in special projects as assigned.
Assists in developing library policies, procedures, goals, and changes to services.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Requires specialized training in basic trades, principles, procedures, practice, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level.
Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.

DescriptionNormal Semester Work Schedule: 12pm – 9pm, Monday – Friday (occasional weekend hours may be required, intersession schedules may vary).
This position supports the research and instructional services of the M.D. Anderson Library at the University of Houston by providing assistance to library users, assisting in the activities of the Service Desk, and supervising student assistants.
Service Desk: Main service point for the M. D. Anderson Library at the University of Houston main campus.
Provide research and technology assistance to library users in person, by telephone and electronically at the Service Desk.
Act as main point of contact for patron issues at the Service Desk during assigned shifts, including, patron complaints and concerns, and any other issues which require a supervisor.
Accept payment of fines and fees and receipt of billed items.
Supervise student assistants and provide guidance on policy issues at the Service Desk.
Create and maintain student assistant schedule.
Assist with hiring, training, and evaluating student assistants.
Keep statistics on use of materials and services and prepare reports as needed.
Perform cleaning and light maintenance of equipment.
Track supply inventories and order supplies as needed.
