A position in the Stanford Network Analysis of Proteins (SNAP) program, a part of a Stanford University wide program for proteomic analysis of human disease and housed in the Baxter Laboratory for Stem Cell Biology (Department of Microbiology and Immunology) and the Stanford Cancer Center has an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to direct a cutting edge cancer and disease research by providing mass spectrometry/proteomic analysis of key proteins involved in human disease and cancer. Proteins will be generated from a high throughput platform for protein tagging and affinity purification and MS analysis will be completed on Orbitrap platforms, including a new Orbitrap Fusion. A major focus is to use these protein interactions to build protein interaction networks to explain disease pathways, and the mass spectrometrist will work extensively with a team of bioinformaticians and other MS data processing specialists to provide the best AP/MS analyses for specific projects. A considerable focus includes mapping PTMs using affinity purification and quantitative peptide labeling technologies, including TMT isotopologues for dose response and time series experiments.
The director will use AP/MS data to build protein networks and guide specific and new directions for proteomic tagging experiments and other high-end MS experiments to understand key areas in cancer. In addition to directed proteomics, a number of shotgun, proteome wide discovery analyses will be performed.
The successful candidate will have experience with large proteomics datasets, and their computational analysis in order to successfully understand and analyze these data. Familiarity with cancer or molecular approaches to disease is desirable.
The successful candidate must be able to work independently under minimal supervision and will provide leadership to the research team. The work will take place in a dynamic environment where workload often change rapidly in response to user demand, so the candidate needs to be good at multi-tasking and managing expectations of multiple stakeholders. The successful candidate will comply with University and government health and safety regulations and policies.

A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biophysics, or Biochemistry with at least nine years of related post-graduate research experience (or 5 years post Ph.D.). Must have technical expertise in protein biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and the operation of state of the art mass spectrometers. Familiarity with analysis of complex proteomics data sets using public and locally written software is important. Successful candidates will have a publication record supporting high productivity and good facility with publishing MS data in high profile and specialist journals. Excellent verbal and written communications skills required. Familiarity with data processing and in developing data analysis programs would be desired. Must be good at multi-tasking and working collaboratively.
Strong technical knowledge of protein purification and high end mass spectrometry using discovery platforms, such as Orbitrap mass spectrometers Familiarity with protein interaction or protein network analyses of disease would be desirable Experience working in academic environments, although industry experience will be of considerable interest.
