The Director of the Schwab Learning Center, in collaboration with the Associate Vice Provost, has major responsibility for the stewardship of the Charles and Helen Schwab endowment that benefits students with learning differences (LD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at Stanford University. Established in 2001, the programs of the Schwab Learning Center formerly reporting to the Office of Accessible Education provide enhanced, innovative services and resources for LD/ADHD students in order to promote their success academically and to facilitate their full integration into the learning and research environment at the University.
The director is both responsible for providing direct services as well as supervisory responsibility for the Learning Strategist(s) in the SLC. S/he is expected to ensure professional staff is appropriately providing reasonable accommodations and enhanced, innovative learning strategies for students with LD/ADHD, in conjunction with following legal mandates and University policies.
SLC is also charged with advancing outreach to students, faculty and staff and proposing practical applications for students with LD/ADHD in higher education. The Director and other SLC staff members maintain a minimum level of scholarly research and promote the dissemination and practical application of research results.
Provide strategy, vision, leadership and direction, establish overall objectives and develop long range plans impacting the Schwab Learning Center, as part of the student services/affairs organization. Liaise with leadership and cross functional areas and schools to implement this vision and strategy. Manage the work of other employees, including senior level staff.
Provide enhanced services and accommodations that emphasize a strength-based model to students with LD/ADHD including teaching individual study strategies and/or workshops for groups of students and University personnel. Perform screening evaluations for students suspected of having a learning or attention difficulty. Correspond and interact with faculty and personnel in other departments as necessary to ensure quality service delivery.
Supervise Learning Specialist(s) to ensure consistency of service provision according to the directives of the Schwab endowment. Provide oversight to make sure that accommodations and strategies comport with legal requirements and University policies and procedures. Instruct and as appropriate evaluate support staff, internally and across the University, such as tutors who work with students with LD/ADHD.
In collaboration with other staff, design and conduct an assessment program on the effectiveness and efficacy of strategies, outreach and University-wide collaboration for the SLC that will contribute to the existing knowledge base of LD/ADHD students at the postsecondary level. Attend conferences, workshops etc. to disseminate research findings in addition to publishing in relevant journals.
Direct efforts of managers; develop those in leadership positions and in the leadership pipeline, make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, manage performance, determine staffing needs, develop and ensure succession planning within area of responsibility.
Identify, clarify, and resolve complex, highly visible issues with university-wide scope and strategic impact and substantial significance which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment and in-depth knowledge of university policies, governance and priorities.
Provide strategic direction for and manage the Schwab Learning Center, including responsibility for programs, budget, facilities, and staff.
Provide counsel and collaborate with senior leadership, in long range planning and policy development.
Work independently to make decisions regarding projects, programs, and initiatives, with limited or no review by senior management: commit university resources with limited or no review by senior officers.
Manage exceptions to university, program, or unit policies and procedures; determine appropriate response to settle grievances.
Participate in setting the direction of The Schwab Learning Centers internal academic and administrative policy development for programs and administrative operations. Negotiate and influence on matters of university-wide impact.
Serve as senior advisor to the Associate Vice Provost for Student Academic Services on programmatic and policy development. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures.
Manage, interpret, implement and ensure compliance with legal, financial, university, academic and administrative policies and external regulations within the Schwab Learning Center.
Direct complex, high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects; Champion major initiatives, develop and drive implementation of project initiatives.
Partner with key individuals from across the university to determine new and ongoing business and technology initiatives.

Qualifications Education & Experience:
Advanced degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. PhD strongly preferred.
Experience in higher education setting strongly preferred.
Teaching credentials is Special Education preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge and experience with the principles, concepts, and methods currently used in educational research, including an understanding of analytical software applications and other specialized research tools and collections
Demonstrated experience in project and budget management. Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information
Knowledge of and experience working with a wide variety of different types of learning disabilities and attention-deficit hyperactivity subtypes
Ability to individually administer and analyze psycho-educational testing to determine the most effective accommodations and learning strategies for LD/ADHD students
Understanding of the laws pertaining to the rights and responsibilities of students with disabilities at the post-secondary level
Knowledge of the laws relevant for access to high stakes standardized testing under the ADA Amendments Act of 2008
User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
Strong leadership and strategic management skills.
Experience managing people.

Certifications and Licenses:
Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
