RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE)-Optics and Quantum Electronics Group, to join a group pursuing fundamental investigations of ultra-scale optical and quantum phenomena to advance the technologies of ultrafast solid-state lasers, high power fiber lasers, attosecond photonics, astro-combs (i.e., femtosecond frequency combs for precision calibration of astrophysical spectrographs), large-scale photonic integration, novel double-chirped mirrors, frequency metrology, and biomedical optical imaging. Will be responsible for leading several projects to improve the performance of astro-combs based on femtosecond Ti:sapphire lasers and Yb-fiber lasers; and for developing high power/energy, few-cycle Er-doped/Yb-doped fiber-laser frequency combs using specially designed large-mode-area fibers and double-chirped mirrors. As the lead on several research projects, will also guide postdocs and graduate students and supervise summer interns.
A Ph.D. in electrical engineering or physics; expertise in nonlinear fiber optics and femtosecond laser frequency combs; and experience in the design, construction, and characterization of astro-combs and high power femtosecond Yb-fiber oscillators/amplifiers. Strong mathematical modeling and nonlinear fiber optics background preferred. Experience in large-mode-area fibers, double chirped or high dispersion mirrors, chirped-pulse amplification, fiber polishing and tapering, generation and characterization of mid- infrared and terahertz pulse, and Fourier transform spectroscopy necessary.
