The Department of Scandinavian at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses, should a need arise, in any of the five modern Nordic languages (Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, or Swedish) or Old Norse. In addition, the pool will include applications from instructors interested in teaching upper-division elective courses that serve as anchor courses for our curriculum, courses in Viking and Medieval history, Old Norse literature and mythology, modern Scandinavian authorship courses (Andersen, Ibsen, Strindberg), genre courses in film, drama, and the prose traditions, cultural history course (including Introduction to Finnish Culture and History), and variable-topics courses organized by thematic content.
The number of positions hired from this pool will vary from semester to semester, subject to the needs of the Department, and in some semesters will be zero. When an instructor is hired, the position may range from 33% to 100% of full time, depending on the number of classes being taught. For any Fall 2015 needs, the initial review date will be April 2, 2015; applications received by this date will receive full consideration for the fall 2015 semester.
Applicants may be selected from this pool for two calendar years. This posting will remain open through March 2, 2017. For a Fall semester, the initial review date is typically in March or April. Published review dates will be updated as needed. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester), and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students via email.
Required Qualifications: Required at the time of application: completion of all M.A. (or equivalent) degree requirements except the Master's thesis
Required by employment start date: Completed M.A. (or equivalent) degree
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience teaching at the college level
If teaching a language course, fluency in the language being taught; for all candidates, fluency in English regardless of course being taught
Knowledge of Nordic literature, history, and/or culture relevant to the course in question
Advanced degree (M.A. or Ph.D) in Scandinavian studies or related field
Salary: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit- 18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions

The department may later request teaching and/or research statements, evidence of teaching effectiveness, such as past course syllabi, teaching evaluations, etc., but they are not required at time of application.
