The Research Sonographer for the MESA study is a specialty position distinguished by the use of cardiac echocardiogram and carotid ultrasound, protocol adherence and frequent interaction with the MESA echo and ultrasound reading center.
The research sonographer will perform a protocol driven, defined echocardiographic and carotid ultrasound examination for submission to the MESA reading center. The sonographer must undergo training and certification by the MESA Echo/Ultrasound trainer prior to scanning participants.
The candidate must acquire expert knowledge of the echocardiogram and carotid ultrasound protocol and procedures as defined, certified, and enforced by the MESA Echo Reading Center with the defined training period.
This is a part-time, approximately 20%, hourly position with schedule to be determined based on study needs.
Duties/Responsibilities: The individual in this position will work in our research clinic, examining long term previously recruited participants for a study of Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.
To obtain high quality 2D and 3D echocardiograms as well as carotid ultrasound within this population based epidemiology study, the echo exams will be performed using a GE Vivid T-8 echo machine and a different ultrasound system (a small, portable system - laptop sized) and a different probe (a vascular probe) for Carotid Ultrasounds.
Specific duties will include: -Operate and maintain echocardiogram and carotid ultrasound equipment, image recording and storage devices. -Document echo analysis and carotid ultrasound on individual study forms. -Explain procedure to the participant and assist participant on and off examination table. -Know, understand and abide by the policies and procedures of the MESA study and local field center. -Work cooperatively with all study staff and investigators. -Be organized and detail oriented. -Have interpersonal and communication skills.

Required Qualifications: -Graduate of an accredited program in cardiac ultrasound technology and experience in Cardiac Echo/Carotid Ultrasound - education and experience must total five years. -Registered/credentialed by RDCS or ARDMS. -Must maintain certification during duration of employment. -Demonstrated ability to proficiently describe preliminary clinical findings of a sonogram to the physician required. -This position requires comprehensive understanding of the procedures and protocols as defined by the MESA Echo/Ultrasound reading center. These are research-quality protocol, which require attention to detail and adherence to protocol beyond the skills needed to image clinical structures. Knowledge and advanced skills in using ECHO/Ultrasound equipment in the field center is required. -Demonstrated/documented high level of analytical ability and technical skill to obtain appropriate images and required measurements for a diagnostic sonography examination is required. -Demonstrated/documented interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with physicians and other health care personnel regarding the scheduling and/or procedures performed in diagnostic sonograms required.
