The Department of Interdisciplinary and Inclusive Education operates within The College of Education, which offers undergraduate programs in early childhood education, elementary education, and Teacher of students with Disabilities (TOSD), teaching and learning, and, Master of Arts in both special education and learning disabilities, a Master of Science in Teaching, and a Master of Education in Teacher Leadership. The College of Education also houses and supports the Early Childhood Demonstration Center, which serves preschool-age children and provides field and clinical experiences for teacher candidates.
The College of Education is searching for a highly qualified and experienced early childhood education professional to teach courses in early childhood education program and at the Early Childhood Demonstration Center (ECDC), Rowan?s child care and education center, to be part of curriculum transformation process at the ECDC towards a child-centered, project approach inspired by Bank Street and Reggio Emilia approaches, join the weekly and monthly staff meetings at ECDC, Early Childhood Program and the Interdisciplinary and Inclusive Education Department as part of service responsibilities, and take other initiatives in the service of the college, university and profession.
In this unique position, the successful candidate will teach one course in the undergraduate early childhood education program and teach mixed-age preschool students (ages 2.5-5) at the ECDC for 20 hours during the week, approximately 4 hours each day (3.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of preparation/planning time). Reporting will be to the IIE department chair with mentorship through ECED program Coordinator as part of undergraduate teaching and service, and to the ECDC Director in terms of teaching in the preschool.
This is a part-time, 10 months, ¾ time position with the possibility of renewal each year. The position requires availability during the regular school day.
- Masters's degree or higher degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in early childhood education or closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education at the time of appointment
- Meets state licensure requirements for early childhood education (P-3)
- A minimum of three (3) years of public or private successful teaching at the early childhood level (Birth to 3rd Grade) in diverse settings, with teaching at preschool or kindergarten level preferred
- Have knowledge of all State guidelines for childcare centers
- Prepare and implement lesson plans on a weekly basis using integrated units of study which supports state and national standards for early childhood education
- Create a classroom environment which supports a constructivist approach to early childhood education
- Maintain a classroom environment free of bias which values diversity, inclusion, tolerance, and acceptance
- Make daily observations and record anecdotal records
- Maintain child folios to document child progress
- Attend professional development, staff meetings, parent involvement activities and parent conferences
- Promote positive behaviors among children utilizing proactive and positive approaches to classroom management
- Implement and ensure program quality
- Collect and record daily attendance
- Maintain a professional atmosphere in the classroom and throughout the school community
- Work cooperatively with instructional support staff
- Perform other related duties as required
- Demonstrated potential or experience in teaching and service in education in the area of undergraduate early childhood education
- Familiarity with the accreditation standards of national associations in early childhood education, such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children
- Strong understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices
- Strong understanding of multiple early childhood systems such as Head Start, public or private early childhood education centers, as well as public schools offering preschool and primary education
- Demonstrated ability in communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, social justice and equity issues in early childhood education; and culturally responsive and differentiated practices in fostering academic achievement
- Demonstrated commitment to working in a university environment devoted to collaboration, collegiality, professional development, diversity, scholarly inquiry, student learning, civic responsibility, and respect for all people
- Demonstrated commitment to working with P-12 schools and underrepresented groups of children.
- A teaching/learning philosophy consistent with the mission of the College of Education
- Experience with constructivist and child-centered practices in teaching young children such as Reggio Emilia approach, the Project Approach, Bank Street Model, integrated curriculum, and social emotional learning.
- Familiarity with current teacher accountability requirements, research, and best practices in early childhood education
- Experience in teaching subject matter methods courses in undergraduate early childhood education including math and science, as well as social studies, literacy and arts.
- Experience with the multiple forms of assessment of young children, and the evaluation of practitioners and early childhood environments such as ECERS-R, CLASS PreK and K-3
- Up-to-date knowledge in policy, practice and research in public education
- Experience with teaching in higher education settings
