Why Work at BNL?
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied sciencefrom the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.
Building on its capabilities in computational science and data management, the Computational Science Initiative (CSI - https://www.bnl.gov/compsci/ ) at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory was established to integrate and leverage computer science, computational science and applied mathematics expertise and investments across multiple programs at the Laboratory. In providing leading computational and data science solutions for BNL's flagship facilities RHIC, LHC Atlas US Tier One Center, NSLS II, CFN CSI is confirming Brookhaven as a leader in tackling the "big data" challenges at the frontiers of scientific discovery. CSI's mission is to provide Leadership in Data Driven Discovery'. We are pursuing this mission by engaging in research into novel approaches and methods throughout the software stack to create high performance analysis and interpretation capabilities for experimental, observational and computational data, the provision of data management and analysis facilities, and the practical application of these resources to critical domain science challenges.
CSI is currently looking for a Director of the Center for Data Driven Discovery (C3D) that will work with computer science, applied mathematics, computational science and domain science researchers to develop, deploy and operate novel data analysis solutions that measurably accelerate discovery in science and industry, as well as enhance our national security. The director will be part of the senior management team of BNL's new Computational Science Initiative.
Provide scientific leadership for the development, implementation and execution of C3D's research and service programs.
Develop scientific strategies to sustain national and international prominence. Ensure that BNL's programs are meeting client needs.
Fulfill programmatic and program manager roles for the Laboratory in data driven discovery by developing research programs and strategic partnerships with other national laboratories, with colleges and universities, other research institutions, and with public and private corporations.
Strengthen existing research, development and operational programs, develop new programs, and drive strategic initiatives for C3D.
Maintain compliance with Laboratory policies, standards, and procedures as documented in SBMS. Implement operational standards to meet the expectations of the Laboratory Agenda.
Support the Director of the Computational Science Initiative in identifying staffing and other resources requirements. Support recruiting initiatives in diversity, fellowships, and university relations. Promote educational outreach programs.
Establish a personal research program in a computer science or mathematics domain related to data driven discovery.
- PhD in Computer Science or Applied Mathematics with at least ten (10) years of related experience in conducting and managing recognized leading research programs related to the Department of Energy in large, multi-disciplinary research organizations.
- Proven track record in building leading research programs incl. strategy development, attracting leading researchers, building partnerships, gaining funding, successful delivery and gaining peer recognition.
- Experience in successfully communicating with key stakeholders, clients, program sponsors and internal staff.
- Regarded as a leading researcher in a field of computer science and applied mathematics related to data driven discovery incl. high performance streaming data analysis algorithms, workflows, programming models, runtime systems, storage and I/O systems and performance modeling.
- Is currently a principal investigator of a substantial portfolio of research projects related to computer science or applied mathematics related to data driven discovery.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance may be required.
- Moderate domestic and foreign travel
