Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $2,127 to $3,351 a month. Starting salary placement depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget, and will not exceed $2,233 a month.
This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 14 paid holidays are offered each year; 13 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.

Conditions of Employment
This is a full time, non-exempt position, which will lead toward permanent status following the successful completion of a probationary period.
Incumbents within the Food Service Series are responsible for meal and menu planning; food preparation, serving, cleans-up, maintenance of food service equipment, utensils and work areas. Under general supervision, the Food Service Worker I (FSW I) will assist in the preparation and/or serving of food and beverage and is responsible for cleaning and maintaining culinary equipment and work areas within established standards. This position will assist in training and providing work direction to student employees, and may recommend items for ordering to the Food Service Worker Lead and/or Management personnel.
Major duties for the Food Service Worker I include, but are not limited to:
- Arrives to work groomed, clean hair and hands in a clean, unwrinkled uniform.
- Adheres to uniform guidelines
- Prepares and serves quality food and beverage in a timely manner per Sous Chef guidelines.
- Relives cooks, bakers, meat cutters by performing routine operations such as stirring foods, greasing pans, and grinding meat.
- Maintaining work area(s) in accordance with set standards.
- Follows all health and safety guidelines.
- Provides effective leadership and training for student employees on job functions for a specified area.
- Provides work direction to student employees and solves problems and adjusts priorities.
- Maintain cash drawers and change funds; operate a POS; secures cash per cash guidelines and maintain a cash accuracy level of +/- $2.00 from master journal tapes or safe counts.
- Restock food and paper products.
- Attend meetings and assists in planning, organizing and assigning tasks to students.
- Fosters and delivers exceptional service and food products following established guidelines.
Performs other secondary duties as assigned.
Work primarily takes place in one of the various kitchens on the Sonoma State University campus. Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors; work conditions include standing and moving for long periods of time in a hot kitchen. Overtime, evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs, including working the University's commencement day which regularly scheduled for one of the last Saturdays in May. Position must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator.
Requires a working knowledge of the methods for cleaning and preparing foods as well as cooking and storing foods; proper methods of arranging dining room furniture, setting tables and serving meals; various types of food service utensils, and equipment; and sanitation and safety measures in a food service environment. Requires the ability to portion servings, follow directions, keep records, read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position, and maintain good working relationships with others. Requires excellent customer service skills; ability to provide effective leadership to student assistants working in this program; ability to work independently and have the ability to motivate self and others toward a common goal; ability to operate in a professional, fast-paced environment and work as a member of a team while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with members of the campus community. The Food Service Worker I must display a professional and hospitable attitude to all. They will communicate verbally with guests, coworkers and supervisors respectfully.
The Food Service Worker I must possess and maintain food protection certification which has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or the Conference for Food Protection (CFP). This position requires the physical ability to frequently lift, carry, and transport objects averaging 50 pounds, stand and walk for long periods of time, regularly use hands, fingers, and arms as well as speak and hear.
Requires the ability to lead and instruct other in appropriate methods of food preparation, food handling and cleaning techniques, solve work problems, adjust priorities, make necessary changes in duties and methods and make sound decisions.
Requires a current, valid California Driver's License and the ability to work indoors and outdoors, as well on nights, holidays and weekend hours.
Evidence of degree(s) or certificate(s) and/or license(s) required at time of hire.
Requires successful completion of a pre-placement physical exam.
