The salary range for this position is $13.38 to $21.09 an hour. Starting placement depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget and will not exceed $13.38 an hour. Benefits include vacation, sick, and holiday time earned in relation to hours worked.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis every Friday until the position is filled.
Conditions of Employment
This is a part time, temporary, non-exempt position scheduled to provide additional support July 1 to September 30. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations. The university reserves the right to terminate this appointment earlier than the scheduled expiration date.
Reporting to the Director of GMC Operations, the custodian performs a wide range of custodial and related duties to ensure a clean, safe and attractive environment for students, staff, faculty and visitors to the Green Music Center.
Under direct supervision, the incumbent will clean and maintain Green Music Center complex and campus areas including such activities as dusting and cleaning all surfaces, removing trash and recyclables; cleaning and disinfecting restrooms; cleaning glass doors, windows and blinds; cleaning off graffiti; vacuuming; spot and full cleaning of carpets and upholstery, cleaning and maintaining floors to include sweeping, dry and/or wet mopping; stripping; refinishing; polishing floors; cleaning metal surfaces, performing general housekeeping duties including, replenishing supplies; keeping custodial closets neat and organized; keeping equipment clean and in good working condition, unclogging drains, reporting leaks and other problems. Cleaning all windows and window frames, stripping and refinishing floors, auto scrubbing floors, extracting carpets, power washing sidewalks, and emptying outdoor garbage and recycle containers, Scrubbing and deep cleaning restrooms and kitchen, moving furniture and equipment, setting up for events.
Essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Restaurant: Dusting bar tops, stools, tables , chairs, hostess station, sweeping and mopping floors, emptying trash and recycle
- Gallery: Wiping down gallery table and benches, wet mopping gallery floor
- Kitchen: Mopping floors, cleaning mats, replenishing towel and soap dispensers
- Executive Retreat: Vacuuming carpet
- Restrooms: Replenishing towel, seat cover, toilet paper and soap dispensers, cleaning and disinfecting sink, mirrors, fixtures, urinals, toilets, walls, partitions, emptying trash, wet mopping floor
- Concert Lounge and Entry Hallway: Dust mopping and wet mopping floors, cleaning all furniture sweeping and mopping stairwells, removing all cobwebs
- Concert Hall: Cleaning all horizontal and vertical services, vacuuming chairs, sweeping and dust mopping floors to include stage and flooring on all levels, removing all cobwebs, sweeping and mopping stairs, cleaning stairwells and rails
The incumbent is responsible for working with a diverse population and workforce and being service oriented and fiscally responsible; establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships; working effectively both independently and as part of a team; prioritizing and performing all work efficiently and effectively; providing strong customer service to internal and external customers; scheduling time off to ensure the department's needs are met and appropriate coverage is secured during personal time off.
Performs other secondary duties as assigned; providing custodial support, including such activities as responding to work orders and campus emergencies, safeguarding areas from unauthorized use and access by locking and unlocking doors and windows; assisting in special events such as assemblies student move out/in and graduation exercises.
The incumbent will be assigned to cleaning various spaces in and around the Green Music Center and Sonoma State University campus. These areas include, but are not limited to, both indoor and outdoor spaces, event venues, offices, conference rooms, food service areas, offices, warehouses and classrooms. The regular work schedule for the position will require working a varied schedule including, but not limited to, evenings, weekends, early mornings and other non-standard times based on operational need tied to venue usage and performance scheduling. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator to meet the operational needs of the department and campus.
This position involves working in areas with limited light; exposed to cold and hot temperatures; below the surface or in confined spaces; and may require working on projects that entail long periods of standing, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Requires knowledge of how to perform basic restroom cleaning, office cleaning and floor care. Must possess the ability to use and operate basic custodial equipment e.g. dust, mop, wet mop, vacuum cleaner (backpack and upright) - one year of custodial experience strongly preferred. Must be able to carry a backpack vacuum and vacuum for up to eight (8) hours, frequently stoop, bend, climb stairs, and stand for long periods of time. Must work in a safe manner when handling and working with chemicals and operating equipment. Must be willing to report safety violations and potentially unsafe conditions to management. Must have the ability to determine and estimate material and equipment needs to complete tasks/jobs/responsibility in an efficient and effective manner. Must possess ability to prioritize and perform work effectively and the ability to meet deadlines. Must provide outstanding customer service to a diverse population; students, staff, faculty, patrons, and visitors of the university. Must possess effective oral and written communications skills and determine appropriate communication methods when expressing idea and thoughts. Must read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Must follow oral and written directions. Must have the ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action, exercising sound judgment. Must possess stress management skills to complete work in a timely manner and meet productivity standards. Must have the ability to make timely decisions appropriate to level of responsibility and be able to clearly explain reasoning for decisions, in addition to including appropriate people in decision making process. Must be able to accept constructive criticism and feedback and incorporate into work. Must have the ability to perform day-to-day responsibilities with little or no direction. Must have the ability to work in a fast paced environment and still be thorough in work. Must have the ability to work independently and within the framework of a team, accepting his/her role as required. Must have the ability to work cooperatively in group situations and work actively to resolve conflicts. Must establish and maintain positive outlook and cooperative working relationships by encouraging open communication, maintain objectivity, and keep emotions under control. Must have the ability to self-evaluate and make improvements or promote quality of work. Must maintain regular and acceptable punctuality and attendance, adhering to defined work hours. Must be committed to high standards of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the university's safety policies and rules. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and successfully complete a pre-placement physical exam.
