Duties and Responsibilities:
The Tax Manager will report to the Tax Director, and will assist in the development, implementation and administration of the University of Houston System’s tax strategy in compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws. Coordinates the reporting of taxes, including income, nonresident alien and unrelated business income taxes.
Coordinates tax reporting objectives and monitors compliance with relevant tax authorities.
Reviews and files the Form 940 annually and the Form 941 quarterly in coordination with Human Resources.
Maintains tax treaty compliance for nonresident alien employees, students and independent contractors.
Determines income-producing activities that may result in unrelated business income tax and coordinates unrelated business income tax return. Also, responsible for filing numerous University tax returns.
Supervises fringe benefit reporting requirements and addresses employment tax issues.
Assists with external audit activities, as well as dealings with federal and state tax authorities.
Collaborates in development of and revisions to University policies to enhance University compliance with federal and state tax laws and regulations. Researches and interprets tax codes.
Monitors legislative developments at the federal and state levels and advises University units accordingly.
Assures state and local sales tax compliance efforts.
Appraises tax-reporting responsibilities in valuing donor contribution and fund raising activities.
Assists in determining whether research activities, joint ventures, and other special activities are consistent with exempt purposes.
Supervises a staff of two, which includes scheduling of work to ensure that all tasks are completed.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field required. Master’s degree in taxation preferred.
Requires a minimum of six (6) years of directly job-related experience.
Prior tax experience at either a public accounting firm, a law firm, or a not-for-profit tax department of a large research university strongly preferred.

The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following:
