Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Skill to apply good laboratory practices with attention to detail. Ability to organize time and materials effectively. Requires the ability to maintain accurate and complete records and to track data when necessary. Ability to interact with others on a congenial and professional level In order to train them in laboratory procedures and use of laboratory equipment. Ability to apply current knowledge and techniques to new and unique research areas and to modify current research areas. Requires an appreciation of health and safety factors associated with handling potentially pathogenic materials.
A. LABORATORY MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION (35%)
1. Monitor and troubleshoot situations dealing with standard and specialized laboratory equipment Including but not limited to: centrifuges, balances, pH meters, egg incubators and hatchers, tissue culture incubators, computers, pipetters, ELISA readers, ELISA automated washer, thermocyclers, autoclaves, and electrophoresis equipment.
2. Maintain and update data records and inventory logs: sera, viruses, bacterial and viral cultures, supplies, experimental data spread sheets and University protocols.
3. Order reagents, eggs and supplies following University of Minnesota policies on ordering.
4. Evaluate and obtain bids for equipment purchases and repairs. Understand and apply University of Minnesota policies regarding equipment expenditures.
5. Coordinate schedules for bird housing and maintenance at
Research Animal Resources; egg setting, incubation and
hatching; Isolator setup and proper operation; Inter- laboratory projects with lab personnel from other University, state or federal laboratories; laboratory safety program including instruction of students, other staff and visiting faculty on laboratory safety; informs lab personnel on new safety regulations.
6. Maintain chemical inventory records following the guidelines and requirements of Environmental Health and Safety.
I 7. Develop protocols, budgets, research plans and data analysis to conduct specific research projects; coordinate schedules of student employees as needed.
8. Develop and implement policies and procedures as needed on management of the laboratory and its projects and personnel.
9. Responsible for adherence to all federal and state regulations; analyze needs for preparing and submitting proper protocols on animal use, care and handling, as well as use of infectious agents.
8. APPLIED RESEARCH PROJECT MANAGEMENT (60%)
1. Implement research projects by creating manageable workloads for employees taking into consideration student employee schedules, vacancies in bird housing, isolators, incubators, availability of equipment and supplies, timeline and budget.
2. Maintain good data records; assist in data entry into computer programs, data analysis and summary of results.
3. Provide data analysis using the following techniques: primary cell culture preparation, cell line propagation, virus isolation and propagation, serological assays (ELISA, fluorescent antibody, immunoblotting), bird handling (including bleeding, vaccination, inoculation, and sample collection), assistance with post-mortem examinations, preparations of hlstopathology samples, and application of molecular biological techniques (PCR, RT-PCR, immunoprecipltatlon).
4. Acquisition of new skills for advancement of projects either through on-site or off-site training.
C. TRAIN AND SUPERVISE STAFF, STUDENTS AND VISITING SCIENTISTS (5%)
1. Maintain safety records for the laboratory. Schedule safety training for laboratory workers as needed.
