Posting Summary: The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia invites candidates, excited for the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative research environment, to apply for a Research Scientist position. The incumbent will perform research to develop technology for a rapid genetic DNA analysis on a microfluidic device. This research involves development and integration of microfluidics and biochemistry assays on the microfluidic scale including DNA extraction, DNA amplification, and DNA separation.
Completion of a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a related discipline is required. Candidates must have effective oral and written communication skills, and at least 4 years of experience, (a) with DNA analysis for forensic human identification including knowledge of at least two commercial software packages for STR analysis (b) extensive experience with conventional and microchip-based DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and DNA separations methods and kits, and (c) development of microfluidic devices for DNA analysis. Experience in developing multiplex PCR chemistry is a strongly desired. Candidates are expected to be capable of handling research relationships with collaborators and vendors and be able to work on a schedule to deliver results under time constraints. Experience and ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary science and directly with an engineering team is strongly desired.
