The Information Technology Services (ITS) division at the University at Albany is searching to fill a Telecommunications Distribution Designer position. The Telecommunications Distribution Designer is responsible for designing and preparing specifications for upgrades, changes and growth in the IT cabling infrastructure (telephone, television and network) and telecommunications rooms. The position is also responsible for developing and executing efficient quality assurance (QA) procedures. These design and QA activities are typically components of projects varying in size from new jack installations to new building construction but may also be components of an ITS-initiated project. The Designer is responsible for building and maintaining current state documentation for this infrastructure.
The University is continually adding new buildings and upgrading the infrastructure for existing buildings. Information Technology Services is seeking experienced candidates with in-depth knowledge of structured cabling standards, horizontal and backbone distribution systems, fiber optics, twisted-pair copper, coaxial copper, connecting hardware, entrance facilities and termination, and telecommunication rooms. Candidates should possess the ability to review and comment on blueprints, bid documents and project manuals. The Telecommunications Distribution Designer will be expected to conduct site visits and collaborate with subject matter experts to create design plans and provide feedback to architects, engineers and/or consultants as required.
The Telecommunications Distribution Designer will be a member of the Network Design and Engineering group in ITS' Enterprise Infrastructure Services unit with responsibilities in the Network infrastructure service area and the Network Access service area. S/he will collaborate with other ITS service areas including Telephony, Television, Data Center, Classroom Technology and Support, Conference Room Technology and Support, and Technology-Enhanced Learning Spaces. S/he will also work closely with various units of the Facilities Management department.
Independently review and comment on blueprints and as-builds (typically Program, Concept Design, Construction Design, 1st Level Design Schematics, Design Development, Pre-Bid Document, and Build-Up) for projects ranging from office rehabs to new buildings
Conduct site visits, participate in project meetings, collaborate with stakeholders, and perform investigative work as needed to support design work and quality assurance
Design and provide consultation to create a scope of work for telecommunications structured cabling installation, removal and/or modifications
Design and provide consultation for telecommunications room installation and/or modifications, components and layout
Develop and maintain Division 27 specifications for University and contract installers.
Develop and maintain current state documentation for ITS' telecommunications distribution systems and telecommunications rooms
Interface/liaison with ITS service teams, Facilities Management staff, and external parties such as SUNY Construction Fund, Dormitory Authority State of New York, and Office of General Services
Serve as project manager, as assigned, for projects where the primary service is Network Access or Networking infrastructure
Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization
At least three years' work experience in construction project management, cable installation, telecommunications design, or network engineering
Familiarity with CommScope/TE/Krone cabling standards
Familiarity with single mode and multi-mode fiber standards
Familiarity with pathway design using conduit and cable trays
Demonstrated ability to read and comment on blueprints and/or bid documents
Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills
Ability to be effective working independently with limited supervision
Ability to operate effectively and efficiently on multiple, simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines
Working knowledge of MS Office suite

Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification
At least seven years' work experience in construction project management, cable installation, telecommunications design, or network engineering
Experience designing in a voice over IP (VoIP) environment
Work experience with a New York State entity or educational institution
Experienced and familiar with the use of MS Visio
Experience with Wi-Fi planning tools
Professional Rank and Salary Range: Senior Programmer/Analyst, SL-4: $70,000 - $80,000
