The Value Institute is currently seeking a Director of Clinical Human Factors to lead the Value Institute’s Quality and Safety Science (QSS) programmatic area. The Director will conduct applied research to address critical patient safety and quality problems at Christiana Care, using human factors engineering to lead cultural change for significant and sustainable impact. The QSS programmatic area is driven by the belief that experiences in health care should be safe, effective, and simple for all. Therefore, we approach our research by leveraging a strong foundation in human factors, rigorous research, and deep clinical domain expertise.
The QSS uses principles of cognitive science, industrial and biomedical engineering, patient safety, bioinformatics, and systems safety to evaluate and design environments, processes, tools, and technologies to support clinical care and prioritize the need for ease of use and patient safety. Research-based performance improvement efforts will address the following areas: medical devices, tools, and technologies; health information technology; incident investigation and risk analysis; physical environment design and construction; usability standards and evidence-based practices; and system wide education and cultural change. The QSS will provide unique complex human factors capabilities in support of clinical care including: systems design; interface analysis; human error identification; human reliability analysis; cognitive task analysis; usability testing and evaluation.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities The Director will be responsible for innovation in safety and innovation in learning, with oversight of the QSS, mentoring and facilitating professional development for team members. The Director will establish and expand a core area of research-based performance improvement initiatives relevant to improving the safety, quality, and efficiency of healthcare; lead small and large scale performance improvement studies with assistance from core Value Institute staff; implement safety innovations at Christiana; serve as an internal expert to advise Christiana Care staff; provide instructional lectures to nurses, physicians, and health care leaders; and disseminate findings and visibility of the QSS at an international level. The Director will identify and engage in opportunities for strategic growth and development and will serve as a member of the leadership team of the Value Institute.
The Director for Human Factors will also assist with the following activities:
Building organizational capacity for improvement
Developing the skills of Christiana Care Faculty and Staff so that they can lead efforts that improve patient safety, quality and efficiency
Building an infrastructure within Christiana Care to enhance patient outcomes
Supporting the scholarly productivity of Christiana Care faculty in conducting patient safety and quality improvement research
Advancing the Science of Safety
Advancing the science of patient safety research by obtaining funding and by publishing papers in peer-reviewed venues that have national and international impact on the field
Creating clinical communities across Christiana Care that continuously work to improve clinical and patient-reported outcomes while reducing costs. These communities are groups of clinicians, managers, patients and others who come together to achieve quality-related goals in an area of health care, such as surgical care or critical care
Medical Simulation will play an integral role in shaping team-based behaviors that create a culture of safety
Listening, learning and sharing
Becoming world experts in patient safety and quality through research, publication and spread of evidence- based best practices
Creating a culture of patient safety within Christiana Care through the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program, leadership, engagement of frontline caregivers and system-wide learning from our mistakes
Providing training opportunities, consultative services and technical support to external partners as well as to the Christiana Care community
Education and Experience:
PhD in Human Factors or a closely related field.
Minimum of 5 years of pragmatic, clinically –oriented research experience, including performance measurement and program evaluation.
Experience with providing leadership for hospital wide evidence-based quality improvement initiatives.
Experience with academic publications and substantive contributions to obtaining external funding for clinical human factors research.
