The Research Medical Physicist will provide basic Radiation Oncology Physics support to the Division of Translational Radiation Sciences (DTRS) of the Radiation Oncology Department, with a particular focus on the development of new irradiation techniques in radiation biology studies. This includes but is not limited to, radiation measurement, calibration, and delivery of radiation for research purposes; imaging, treatment planning, and treatment delivery of animals; the analysis of results, writing of reports and standard operating procedures. Duties also include maintaining a comprehensive quality assurance program. Maintains database of irradiators, of radiation measurements made, of measurement systems used, and of results of calibrations and irradiations. Performs calculations of radiation dose distributions and creates treatment plans of irradiated animals as needed. Supports In-Vivo Dosimetry Program. Also provides technical support of Principal and Co-Investigator(s), as specified by, and under the direct guidance of appointed Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Members from the division of DTRS and Medical Physics. This position impacts quality assurance for the Division's radiation physics.

Provide all levels of Medical Physics (with a strong emphasis on Radiation Therapy/Oncology Physics) support for the Radiation Oncology Department Division of Translational Sciences (DTRS) . Works alongside Radiation Oncology faculty members from the divisions of Medical Physics and DTRS to support ongoing radiation biology studies and federal research contracts of the department of Radiation Oncology.
Performs basic 3-D conformal radiation therapy treatment planning using Radiation Oncology treatment planning systems (TPS) to simulate radiation dose distributions delivered to animals in the context of radiation biology studies. Designs, documents and validates new irradiation techniques for a variety of studies, including designing study-specific phantoms, immobilization devices, and experimental radiation dose measurement protocols to verify the accuracy of dose delivery in these special procedures. Uses a variety of radiation dosimeters commonly used in Radiation Oncology clinical environments, including optically-stimulated luminescence detectors (OSLDs), ionization chambers, and radiochromic film to this effect.
Supervises and operates the DTRS's in-vivo dosimetry program for a variety of radiation biology studies performed by the DTRS. This includes measuring animal-specific delivered doses, weekly quality assurance and periodic calibration/maintenance of the OSLD microstar II reader.
Performs all aspects of quality assurance measurements on kilovoltage biological research irradiators, dose measurement instrumentation, and of imaging, planning, and dose-calculation systems used to support the DTRS. Maintains documentation and updates quality assurance procedures and standard operating procedures as needed.
Working with board-certified faculty members from the division of Medical Physics, participates in the calibration and commissioning of kilovoltage x-ray research irradiators and dosimetry equipment. Tests and evaluates new dosimetry and imaging phantoms and software used in radiation biology studies. Performs acceptance and commissioning measurements for irradiation, dose-calculation and planning systems used in radiation biology studies.
Reviews results of irradiations and analyzes data. Prepares scientific reports as required. Coordinates and schedules irradiations, treatment planning, and imaging activities, and performs imaging, planning, and treatments of research animals and or specimens as directed and as needed to support ongoing studies.
Develops and documents procedures, protocols, and technical correspondence.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education : Master's degree in a CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics program, preferably with focus on Radiation Oncology/Radiation Therapy physics.
Preferred: A Doctoral degree in one of the following: either a CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics program, or a relevant field (e.g. physics or biomedical/nuclear engineering) accompanied with the completion of a CAMPEP-accredited post-doctoral Medical Physics Certificate.
Experience operating and performing quality assurance on radiation oncology clinical linear accelerators and/or kilovoltage biological irradiators (e.g. X-RAD 320, SARRP) strongly preferred.
Experience performing kilovoltage x-ray dosimetry (Monte Carlo simulation and/or empirical measurement) for kilovoltage biological irradiators an asset.
Experience performing dosimetric measurements using a variety of radiation dosimeters used in the context of a Radiation Oncology clinical Quality Assurance program, including but not restricted to: Ionization chambers, OSLDs, radiochromic film, thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs).
Experience and knowledge using radiation therapy treatment planning systems, Matlab, and Monte Carlo algorithms an asset.
Other: Routinely necessary to lift equipment, phantoms, etc. weighing up to 40 lbs., maintain precautions necessary for peripheral work with animals Training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials or radioactive materials. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to comprehend and apply federal, state and local ionizing radiation regulations, to a University environment. Knowledge of health and medical physics technical standards and analytical techniques. Ability to use and interpret data from complex devices and analytical equipment. Ability to establish policies and procedures, prepare and interpret technical reports, and maintain required records. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key administrative, research, and professional personnel as well as external agencies. Ability to develop and present lectures and training to institutional and non-institutional groups on a full range of subject matter related to radiation standards.
Hiring Range: Target salary is $80,000 - $100,000 and will be commensurate with education and experience.
