The Senior Systems Engineer will have technical responsibilities as well as administrative responsibilities that include assisting in project planning and management, setting project and support priorities, reviewing all documentation and being a leader by example for the Engineering team. The position is the primary resource to design, install, maintain and support the operating systems (software and architecture), the network infrastructure (LAN and WAN), system security, backup systems and disaster recovery including but not limited to switches, routers, firewall, VPN, cabling, data communications provider, tape backup systems and all supporting software. The position works with our vendors and the other Engineers in the department to cover all aspects of our data and voice networks.
The key responsibilities of the Senior Systems Engineer will be to design enterprise level solutions that support the current and future strategic direction of the firm. The areas of focus include design, implementation, documentation and support of an MPLS or equivalent WAN, LAN gear, SAN/NAS storage systems, server architecture and design, backup/DR/replication systems, monitoring systems, remote access systems, and various security and network perimeter defense systems. The Engineer will have demonstrated success working on large and small projects as a leader and as a role player and have a good working knowledge of project management methods and processes and a proven history of effective communication skills at all levels of the organization. The successful candidate will have exceptional interpersonal skills, technical communication skills, as well as a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
Primary Job Functions
Technical duties include but are not limited to:
Design, administration and support of IP network infrastructure
Design, administration and support for replication and tape backup systems
Provide hands-on 3rd level support for firm production systems
Storage design & capacity planning
Methodical problem diagnosis and resolution/root cause analysis
Design and administration of Network Systems
Provide administration and support for Active Directory and Domain Controllers
Provide administration and support for E-mail Messaging Systems
Design and support for virtualized technologies
Design and 3rd level support of all phone systems; assist in maintenance and troubleshooting as necessary
Monitor and report on network and systems capacity utilization
Daily monitoring and reporting on all systems
Appropriately prioritize system faults, diagnosis and resolution
Ensure that proper redundancy is maintained
Provide 3rd level user support on escalated issues
Documentation of ALL installations and configuration issues
Back up core competencies of the other Network Engineers
Perform tasks on larger scope projects and report status back to project manager
Non-technical responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Track time on projects and maintenance daily
Required to carry a cell phone/wireless device to be on call outside normal work hours
5%-10% travel to other firm offices (Ohio, Chicago, Florida)
The Senior Systems Engineer will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent technical and leadership experience as well as appropriate technical certifications. He or She will possess strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with customers from all levels of the organization. Strong organizational and communications skills, strong analytical skills and the ability to multi-task are required components of the job.
The position requires that the Engineer be comfortable working in a professional office environment, spending a significant amount of time working on a computer and/or in a data center environment. On occasion he/she will be required to lift or move heavy computer equipment. The dress code is business casual or business professional.
Key technical requirements include but not limited to:
Very strong knowledge of MS Windows Server and AD, MCSE preferred
Strong knowledge of phone system design and programming
Strong knowledge of MS Exchange Messaging systems (Experience with Exchange 2010+ preferred)
Strong documentation skills
Strong software and hardware troubleshooting skills
Knowledge of virtualization technologies (Hyper-V experience preferred)
Knowledge of network topologies and protocols
Experience with routers, switches, and other networking equipment
Experience with secure LAN\WAN infrastructure, firewalls, VPNs.
Knowledge of enterprise cloud systems (MS Office 365/Azure preferred)
Good understanding of help desk operational an communication processes
Good understanding of project management techniques
Proven ability to take ownership of all tasks and successfully manage multiple priorities.
Knowledge of network topologies and protocols
