Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Energy & Sustainability Specialist
Under general direction, assists the Sustainability Supervisor of Energy Services with planning, organizing, integrating and implementing the Medical Centers sustainability strategy; develops environmental program plans and budgets to meet the Medical Centers sustainability policy and commitments and directs their implementation. In this role, the Sustainability Specialist will direct the coordination and collaboration with other departments, government agencies, other governmental entities and non-governmental organizations on matters related to environmental pollution prevention and sustainability. In this role the Sustainability Specialist will coordinate sustainability program functions and activities related to the Medical Centers sustainable new building developments as well as operations of existing facilities. The Sustainability Specialist will organize, direct, manage, and evaluate the work of professional and technical staff and will monitor and ensure program adherence to the Medical Centers sustainability policy and commitments and applicable laws, regulations and regulatory agency requirements.
Examples of Duties:
Leads and manages the development, implementation, evaluation and refinement of sustainability programs, projects, plans, processes, systems and procedures to achieve Medical Center and Real Estate Development & Facilities Department goals, objectives, and performance measures consistent with the Medical Center's quality and patient service expectations.
Oversight of individual sustainability driven project development, and technical research/analysis, scheduling, project budgeting, project performance metrics and results and evaluates the work of third party technical advisors and the onsite Energy Engineers in tandem with the Senior Director for Energy Services.
Serves as a subject matter expert around environmental and sustainability issues broadly and in healthcare.
Responsible for all internal communications for the purpose of promoting the adoption of and the recognition for the GreenFirst sustainability program. Communications will be with stakeholders at all levels in the organization throughout the hospital, school, and real estate portfolio across a range of communication methodologies including maintaining the GreenFirst internal social media site. Take on system-wide speaking opportunities to grow awareness of the program.
Responsible for all external communications and for representing the GreenFirst program. Write case studies, speak, participate in panels, and sit on external committees to raise awareness of the program and contribute to national body of knowledge on sustainability in a healthcare setting.
Responsible for the development of energy and sustainability executive reports, environmental excellence award applications and other external reporting and recognition programs on the local, state and federal level.
Regularly monitors performance and provides coaching for performance improvement and development by NYU Medical Center “green team” employees and supports the development of a cross-departmental senior level Sustainability Committee.
Provides day-to-day leadership and works with staff to ensure a high performing, patient service-oriented work environment that supports achieving the Medical Center’s mission, objectives and values regarding team building, employee empowerment and an efficient workplace; applies process improvement and quality management principles to areas of responsibility.
Directs the assessment of the Medical Center’s energy and sustainability performance and ensures department objectives and priorities are focused on meeting sustainability mandates and commitments effectively, efficiently and in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
Directs the preparation of budgets for environmental programs and sustainability initiatives; identifies and recommends sustainable applications for Medical Center projects and operations taking into consideration total cost of ownership, return on investment and opportunities for grants and other funding sources.
Directs and coordinates the preparation of analyses and recommendations regarding policy issues and long-range plans to address the implementation of the Medical Center’s sustainability strategy; advises the Medical Center’s Administration regarding policy issues, programs and projects to meet Medical Center needs.
Participates in industry and intergovernmental activities to influence legislative, regulatory and market supply change consistent with the Medical Center’s interests and needs; represents the Medical Center with other governmental agencies, professional organizations and elected officials.
Participates in collaborative efforts with local municipalities, resource agencies, utilities, community groups, academic institutions and non-governmental organizations focused on fostering and promoting regional environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in an environmental, physical or earth science or a closely related field. Progressively responsible work experience involving analysis, planning, and/or implementation of professional environmental-related program assignments.
A Graduate Degree is highly desirable.
