Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Manager-Electrical Systems.
In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for supervising all activities of the Electrical Shop including direct supervision of 2 foremen and up to 20 electrical mechanics and helpers. Responsible for compliance with all electrical codes and installations on site. Directs day-to-day efforts of union staff, retains and supervises outside contractors and engineering consultants. Implements Plant Maintenance Requests (PMR) of clients and performs electrical shutdowns, startups and testing of all utility systems. Provides safe, efficient uninterrupted operations and maintenance of all electrical equipment and systems.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Budget/Financial Control - Prepares and tracks the shops budget and associated capital projects. Participates in department work planning and goal setting for the coordination of short-term work efforts and long term projects such as capital improvements. Develops the annual shop budget on a timely basis including requests for added staff and/or programs. Clearly defines consequences to the institution should the added programs and/or projects not be implemented. Controls and tracks purchase requisitions, purchase order, capital requisition invoice and billing status to insure timely start and finish of job and vendor payment. Use of funds in tracked and variances are reported along with proposed corrective measures. Necessary capital items are proposed when requested. These items should be properly scoped so that all anticipated charges and reasonable contingencies are included in the costs.
Maintenance of Auxiliary Systems - Maintains auxiliary systems assigned to the electrical shop and its supervisors. In addition to the electrical distribution, responsible for the maintenance; repair and inspecting of patient care equipment and electric devices. Administers patient bed inspection and repair program Administers inspection and repair of non-clinical patient equipment such as refrigerators, ice machines, etc. Reviews status of these auxiliary systems, establishes repair needs and proposes capital and staffing budgets to address known problems.
Maintenance of Site Electrical Distribution - Responsible for the continuous operation and maintenance of electrical equipment systems, emergency generators and automatic transfer switches. Handles emergency problems, breakdowns and other unanticipated events, many of which can affect patient, staff and visitors life safety. Review electrical systems and develops preventative maintenance program for these. Documents and establishes necessary staffing, expense and capital budgets for the programs. Coordinates system shutdowns when necessary with proper communication to users and with minimum disruption to the NYU staff as practical. Able to recognize the priority and critical nature of problems and acts appropriately and acquires necessary support. Interface smoothly with other shops when assistance is necessary.
Project Management - In conjunction with the Project and Operations Maintenance Managers and outside consultants, manages in-house electrical projects either alone or in electrical support to more broad projects encompassing many trades. Establishes scope of equipment and services necessary. Defines cost of work through competitive bids. Establishes support needed from other shops, personnel or outside firms. Closely tracks job progress and reports time or budget variances in a timely manner. Upon completion of the project, the proper invoices, bills and reports are handled including final Punch List items and overall quality review.
Staffing/Individual Supervision and Development - Responsible for the staffing level of the shop, providing adequate performance evaluation and personnel counseling. Interviews prospective employees and recommends hires to Mechanical Systems Manger and/or Associate Director Plant Operations. Disciplines subordinates when necessary in accordance with NYU personnel policies and procedures and union contract constraints. Insure there are assistant (back-up) foreman available when possible. Insures shop operations and policies are consistent with union requirements, contract guidelines and inter-shop work practice consistency. Recognizes when termination must be necessary and insure there is accurate and complete documentation to support the action.
Supervision of Electrical Shop Activities - Responsible for the action of 2 foremen and up to 15 mechanics and helpers. Insures the day-to-day facility support is provided through timely response to house calls. Maintains necessary operations and needed shift coverage 24 hours per day 7 days per week. Assigns staff to perform reoccurring preventative maintenance of equipment. Assigns staff to respond to known problems in electrical equipment. Supplies electrical shop support to other managers including contractors and outside groups when necessary. Tracks employee attendance and reviews payroll for respective shops on a weekly basis.
Scheduling of Electrical Staff - Establishes work hours of employees (including breaks, lunches and overtime), vacation approvals, and sick time and vacation coverage needs and through the shop foremen monitors the work performed. Defines work assignments and communicates them to the employee and insures these are distributing equitable. Insures proper resources such as material and support staff is available to perform the job. Provides input during the review and refinement of the building program definition. Insures work is assigned such individual capabilities and initiative is considered.
Minimum Qualifications: A NYC Electrical license is required as well as a Technical Bachelors Degree and related experience including 4-6 years experience in electrical utilities, power generation and instrumentation; with at least 2 years of union trade supervisory experience. Highly motivated and detail-oriented desired. In addition, must possess the ability to function a stressful situation and respond to emergency conditions.
