The primary responsibility of the Pathologists Assistant will be participation on the surgical pathology service (dictation, dissection, submission of sections for microscopic examination, assistance with performance of frozen section, specimen photography, support of tissue procurement for clinical research/trials).
The incumbent will be expected to be proficient in surgical pathology prosection and may on occasion need to log in specimens or place specimens on tissue processors.
The Pathologists Assistant may on occasion be required to stay after normal working hours to assist in specimen prosection or frozen sections. He/she will also assist in the instruction of students, residents and fellows.
The Pathologists Assistant reports to the department chair or his designee. Other duties may be assigned, consistent with the incumbent's position and training.

Candidates must meet requirements for Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) high complexity testing with a Bachelor's degree that must include completion of 60 semester hours of college courses with either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours of chemistry; 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology, or any combination) and at least three months of documented laboratory training in surgical pathology specimen prosection.

Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has both clinical and basic science responsibilities. The department has service, teaching, and research responsibilities in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has 25 faculty, 18 permanent SHRA/CSS employees, and 2 fellows. The department has a pathology residency program with 12 approved positions and fellowship programs in forensic pathology, cytopathology and surgical pathology. The successful candidate will join a two Pathology Assistants primarily assigned to the surgical pathology service and two Pathology Assistants primarily assigned to the autopsy service. Approximately 20,000 surgical cases are accessioned annually.
