Casual Neonatal Nurse practitioner sought to work with a large Nemours Neonatology group in Southeast PA. This group covers NICUs for the Main Line Health Hospitals, including Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr Hospital, and Paoli Hospital. Day, evening, and weekend hours are required. The NNP will function in an expanded collaborative role by planning and providing comprehensive, complete management of a primary caseload of critically-ill infants and their families. Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills in all phases of practice.
Manages and provides care for the patient requiring neonatal intensive care utilizing collaborative consultation with team members, under the direction and supervision (but not necessarily the direct attendance) of an attending neonatologist.
Receives a distressed neonate in the Delivery Room and initiates appropriate intervention.
Performs a complete newborn physical examination and assessment of gestational age, discriminating between normal and abnormal findings.
Collaborates with neonatologists concerning pertinent historical events, physical findings, diagnostic and therapeutic measures initiated on all admissions.
Orders appropriate laboratory tests and procedures.
Procedures carried out by the NNP may include:
Insertion of intravenous catheters, umbilical artery and vein catheters, percutaneous arterial lines and PICC lines
Artery puncture, Lumbar puncture, Venipuncture
Ordering daily fluids and medications
Suprapubic bladder tap/bladder catheterization
Laryngoscopy and tracheal suctioning
Interpretation of routine lab studies & neonatal radiographs
Thoracentesis (needle decompression of pneumothorax)
Chest Tube Placement (with physician assistance)
Order vasoactive drug(s) infusion(s)
Advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation of neonates, including drug therapy.
Reviews and provides general care items involved in neonatal care, such as temperature stabilization, hyperalimentation therapy, feeding management, and phototherapy.
Participates in daily rounds in NICU
Intervenes appropriately to assist in meeting the emotional needs of the families
Collaborates with attending physician, social worker, nursing staff, and other health care members in planning follow-up care
Actively participates in counseling and educating parents and family members
Facilitates the transfer of patients to/from other hospitals
Performs transport of critically-ill infants to/from referring hospitals
Verifies that the quality of care is documented in the medical records
Elicits, records and interprets the past medical, psychosocial and obstetrical history of the neonate's family.
Documents total plan for delivery of care, writes orders for accomplishing that plan and implements the plan personally or through collaboration with medical and nursing staff. Orders will be co-signed by a neonatologist or attending physician according to facility medical staff bylaws and regulations.
Evaluates and revises plan of care on an ongoing basis and reviews revisions with Neonatologist.
Assists with discharge planning/teaching. Assists with completion of discharge summary.
Participates in quality assurance and improvement programs and works with department management to improve the services provided.
Education and Teaching
Participates in educational activities, which promote quality patient care.
Serves on appropriate committees which determine policies related to the delivery of health care to high-risk infants
Performs informal and formal clinical research in collaboration with other medical and nursing personnel and publishes findings as appropriate.
Makes informed recommendations for implementation of new concepts and techniques affecting patient care.
Participates in parent education Participates in activities, which contribute to the education of other professionals.
Teaches NICU continuing education classes.
Contributes to pertinent obstetric and pediatric conferences related to perinatal care. Assists with the continuing education of residents as requested.
Participates in the education of student nurses/nurse practitioners.
