The Office of Biotechnology at Iowa State University is currently seeking applications for a Research Associate – Greenhouse. This position will manage all aspects of plant care and seed production for the biotech production pipelines of maize, soybean and rice at the Plant Transformation Facility (PTF). The PTF is a core ISU research service facility in the Office of Biotechnology, a unit within the Office of the Vice President for Research. This position will be filled as either a Research Associate I or II.
Overall responsibilities include leading, developing and implementing research and practices to ensure, with effective delegation to supervisees, successful year-round production of biotech and non-biotech crop plants in the greenhouse, growth chamber and/or field to satisfy the increasing service demand from both on- and off- campus academic customers. Other responsibilities will include data and inventory management and for generating all reports and support materials pertaining to greenhouse/field research and production projects, including timely direct communications with on and off campus customers, researchers, managers and suppliers. Further, the incumbent will oversee shipping and handling of all biotech or non-biotech materials including tissue cultures, plantlet and seed.
In addition to the above, a Research Associate II must create, develop and maintain up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures that comply with Department of Transportation (DOT) and USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) requirements for shipping genetically modified material.
The successful candidate will excel at working as part of a team, at identifying and supervising dependable hourly help, and at effective interpersonal communication (written and oral). The candidate will have excellent time, labor and resource management skills to ensure that optimal greenhouse care of biotech and non-biotech crops is delivered throughout the year. The candidate will be self-motivated, able to work autonomously, capable of multi-tasking and able to meet production goals and time-lines for customers and laboratory needs. Given the nature of the duties of this position, the candidate must be able to identify key factors (at the scientific, production and practical level) involved in the successful operation of a greenhouse and a summer field nursery. The duties of this position will require an ability to lift heavy objects and to work in a hot greenhouse in the summer months.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
-Degree with emphasis in Horticulture, Agronomy, or Plant-related discipline -Experience growing maize and/or soybean under greenhouse conditions -Experience with insect, nutrient deficiency, and soil pH monitoring -Experience using computer applications to manage multiple large spreadsheets -Experience conducting controlled experiments with plants -Experience designing, implementing and analyzing controlled research projects
