<p>The Access Consultant arranges and provides reasonable accommodations for qualified Undergraduate, Graduate and Professional students with disabilities. To accomplish this, Consultants employ an individualized and interactive process. This process requires communication with University students, instructors, department administrators, and other student services staff to ensure accommodations are reasonable, appropriate, consistent with University academic standards and educational outcomes, reflect the requirements of the ADA (as amended) and comply with other relevant legal guidance and University Policies. <br /><br />The Access Consultant considers immediate as well as long-term needs, trends and legal constraints related to the student population that uses the Disability Resource Center. These considerations also inform the guidance, referral and coordination of academic supports they provide. The Access Consultant possesses knowledge of disability and diversity issues, and participates on DRC workgroups, ad hoc projects, and on University committees when appropriate. The Consultant asserts a moderate level of independence while maintaining interdependence with key functions inside the DRC to ensure an integrated accommodations process. Access Consultants also conduct liaison and outreach activities to inform the university community about disability, disability culture, accommodations, and best practices related to reasonable access.</p><p>Duties and Responsibilities:<br />Direct Service - 80 % <br />• Engage in an interactive process in collaboration with prospective and enrolled students with disabilities, healthcare practitioners, instructors and staff to determine reasonable accommodations that do not compromise essential course requirements or learning outcomes.<br />• Assist students with obtaining documentation of their disability conditions.<br />• Review and interpret medical, psychological and neuropsychological assessments to determine how the student's impacts translate to an academic setting.<br />• Maintain strict confidentiality of protected information.<br />• Assess the interaction of the student's disability impacts with the academic environment to develop and coordinate a plan for the provision of reasonable academic accommodations.<br />• Consult with instructors and staff within individual departments and colleges to determine the essential course and programmatic requirements to ensure accommodations do not compromise the integrity of either.<br />• Advise and mentor students with disabilities to promote self-advocacy, independence and development, and provide resources, referrals and support as needed.<br />• Stay apprised of national, state and local disability legislation and issues and assist students in understanding their disabilities and legal rights and responsibilities.<br />• Conduct regular reviews of student files to maintain up-to-date and accurate case records and notes.</p><p><br />Institutional Support - 10 %<br />• Attend and participate in staff and unit meetings, university committees, task forces, and networks as recommended by the Associate Director.<br />• Collaborate with, through liaison roles, various university offices to ensure that our offices' policies and practices are effectively aligned to address the holistic needs of students.<br />• Participate in work groups to; conduct research on disability-related topics, address communication needs of Disability Services, promote student development through sponsorship of disability-related programs, and assess assistive technology needs of students with disabilities.</p><p><br />Pursue and Provide Professional Development and Training - 10 %<br />• Develop research based informational presentations, training workshops, or course material, on relevant disability-related topics. Deliver these presentations to faculty, staff and students at the university as well as to professional peers on both the local and national levels.<br />• Provide consultation and technical assistance on disability issues, as needed or requested, to individuals and groups at the university and in the community.<br />• Pursue and participate in professional development activities including presentations, conferences, seminars, workshops and related activities to increase knowledge and understanding of tools, skills and best practices in the field.<br />• Maintain membership in relevant professional organizations.<br />• Attend trainings and presentations offered by other offices serving individuals with disabilities.<br />• Share knowledge and information gathered from professional development activities with colleagues and management. </p><p>This is a 100% full-time, 12 month, position with benefits.</p>
<p><br />Required Qualifications<br />• BA/BS with 4 years of relevant experience: facilitating access for people with disabilities, working in higher education, providing supervision to service providers<br />• Demonstrated experience in, and an ongoing commitment to, working effectively with and across diverse communities, including specific experience with one or more of the following identities/communities: people of color, including underrepresented groups and new immigrant populations; American Indians; people with both visible and invisible disabilities; women; people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions; and first-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.<br />• Substantial knowledge of federal and state laws regarding access for people with disabilities<br />• Substantial knowledge of integrating disability access and accommodations in university environments and processes<br />• Experience in providing consultation on disability issues<br />• Excellent communication and organizational skills<br /><br />Preferred Qualifications<br />• Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Student Personnel, Counseling, Psychology or a related field<br />• Knowledge and understanding of trends and issues in disability access in a college setting<br />• Knowledge of and experience with inclusive design strategies for learning<br />• Demonstrated ability to effectively meet the demands of multiple stakeholders<br />• Project planning development and management skills</p>
