The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine, Institute for Global Health (IGH) is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Research Specialist . The Laboratory Research Specialist functions as a single specialist in a laboratory setting and is responsible for providing the highest technical expertise to conduct and complete research project(s) and overseeing laboratory research activities.

Works independently performing laboratory assays and executing research projects to completion. Works in a team performing designated tasks. Accomplishes tasks meeting deadlines. In all instances, provides the highest technical expertise, following procedures and guidance.
Review scientific literature, designs research studies, establishes and improves laboratory methods. Compiles, analyzes, and interprets research data using various relevant computer software applications. Produces laboratory reports and assists in preparation of research reports.
Executes assigned day-to-day laboratory operations ensuring quality control and safety compliance. Follows and develops procedures.
Performs laboratory research activities related to clinical/vaccine immunology that include: tissue processing (i.e. isolation of cells, serum), specimen catalog and organization, cell-based assays (i.e. antibody, cytokine production), measurements of antibodies (i.e. antibody avidity, subclasses) using a variety of assays of various complexity, maintenance of cells in culture, functional antibody assays (i.e. viral neutralization assays, hemagglutination inhibition, bactericidal and toxin neutralization assays, preparation of bacterial/virus stock, virus titration).
Assists in preparation and editing of graphics for publication and presentations, manuscripts. Presents laboratory results at meetings.
Assist in the training of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral, international fellows, and/or junior technical personnel in the performance of a variety of laboratory techniques.
Contributes to the preparation of grant proposals and budgets.
Maintains inventory of reagents and lab supplies.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Immunology, Microbiology, Biology or in a field of study related to research performed in the laboratory. Master's degree is preferred.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in laboratory research including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization (i.e. immunology and laboratory assays as described above) immunological assays, including tissue culture techniques).
Other: Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.
May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
* Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the laboratory, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research laboratory. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
