Walker seeks a highly skilled, dedicated, experienced individual for the Director of its new Immersive Dyslexia Program (Lower School) for the 2018-2019 school year. This is a unique opportunity to work in a specialized school-within-a-school setting at its inception.
Walker’s Immersive Dyslexia Program will be launched for 2018-2019 academic year. The mission of the program is to serve children with dyslexia who have above-average academic aptitude and a strong desire to fulfill their abundant potential. Initially the program will serve elementary-age students. Two or three classes are anticipated in the inaugural year. Students in the program, their classroom teachers, and the Director will work and learn within The Walker School’s college-preparatory environment. The Orton-Gillingham Approach (O-G) will be central to the curriculum. The Director will work alongside the Immersive Dyslexia Program classroom teachers, the Lower School Head, and grade-level teachers in a collaborative manner but will have the primary responsibility for supervising the teachers in the dyslexia program as well as the learning environment for the students in the program. The Director will also be responsible for assuring a cooperative and positive adult working environment.
The Director of the Immersive Dyslexia Program is responsible for the day-to-day management of the division, the education and character development of approximately 12-18 students, first through fourth grade, the supervision of 2-3 faculty, and communication with parents. Key duties include overseeing the academic experience and curriculum and serving as spokesperson for the program. In addition, the Director will have O-G teaching responsibilities. The Director is responsible for maintaining the tone and balance for the program and is a member of the Senior Administrative Team.
A Master’s degree in elementary education or special education and/or educational administration is required along with substantive teaching experience, preferably in an independent school environment. Administrative experience is preferred. Documented formal training in and experience teaching dyslexic students using the Orton-Gillingham Approach is required. Membership in the Orton-Gillingham Academy of Practitioners and Educators is a plus.
