Under direction of the Division Chief of Anatomic Pathology and the Sr. PA Supervisor, the Sr. Pathologists' Assistant (PA) is a certified healthcare professional who provides highly specialized technical knowledge and skills both in surgical and autopsy pathology. PA's are trained to assume the grossing, autopsy dissection, and assist with teaching responsibilities of all the duties below. Provides support for the Pathology staff and department.
Duties include: preparation, gross anatomic description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens, accessioning, obtaining pertinent clinical information and history, preparing samples for histological processing, lab studies such as flow cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry, performing special imaging and tumor triage, prepares and submits tissue section for light microscopy, frozen sections, electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy, and photographing gross specimens and slides. Assists with reports and data.
Assures proper equipment maintenance, and cleanliness of surgical pathology suite. Autopsy - reviews legal authorization for autopsy, confers with attending Pathologist any special techniques and procedures to be utilized in examination study, and notify funeral home. Coordinates special specimen sampling. Performs postmortem exams. Prepares frozen tissue sections for examinations. Photograph body, organs, and other pertinent materials. Prepares body for release, including bio-hazard precautions as indicated. Performs other related clinical specialist functions as required.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Completion of a two (2)-year Pathologists' Assistant program (NAACLS accredited), or similar program.
Three to Five (3-5) or more years of relevant experience.
ASCP certified, or eligible.
Experience and proven success with advanced knowledge in pathology theory and industry best practices.
Experience working with residents.
