Agency and position description: The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights is a membership coalition comprised of more than 130 organizations providing services to and advocating for the rights of immigrants and refugees. The Coalition’s mission is to promote the rights of immigrants and refugees to participate fully and equally in our diverse society. The Coalition acts as a clearinghouse and conveyor for its member organizations, initiating training and technical assistance, overseeing and implementing community outreach and public education, developing leadership, coordinating delivery of services, carrying out advocacy and community organizing and communicating with the media.
The Communications coordinator is a member of the union staff. The Communications coordinator will be responsible for implementing the communications strategy. The Communications Coordinator will work collaboratively with the organizing and policy team, and will work closely with the executive director.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Fielding media inquiries, and identifying who should respond—this will often include identifying leaders or other individuals who can cover a certain angle or meet other criteria
Developing and disseminating messaging, including talking points, statements, and social media, whether proactive or reactive
Drafting/editing/sending media materials
Organizing press events, including developing messaging, identifying and preparing speakers, drafting and sending advisories, contacting media before the event, and conducting follow-up contact after the event
Coordinating the pitching of stories to media outlets— including identifying the appropriate media, developing story ideas and angles, as well as identifying ICIRR staff or partners willing to speak.
Drafting/editing/finding “authors” for op-ed pieces
Posting on social media
Coordinating staff and stakeholders to plan broader media strategy for campaigns, including timing, messaging, speaker training, coordinating with allies
Coordinating staff and stakeholders to develop broader media strategy for the entire organization, including branding, materials, web presence
Work with staff, leaders, and other stakeholders to form effective messages around Coalition campaigns: Federal immigration reform, protection of civil rights and civil liberties, and local campaigns targeting political, mainstream, and ethnic communities.
With organizing and policy staff and other stakeholders strategize and develop the social media content, and implementation of social media campaigns.
Coordinate staff to, and when necessary, act as spokesperson for the organization for press briefings and media interviews.
Responsible for coordination of press conferences, press briefings and editorial board meetings.
Be part of a team effort to pitch stories to national, local, mainstream and ethnic media outlets.
Coordinate media efforts with staff, leaders, board members and coalition partners locally and nationally.
Cultivate relationships with mainstream, ethnic and social media with the objective of expanding coverage of immigration and immigrant issues. Maintain and expand roster of press contacts within the ICIRR database.
Provide training and support to member organizations with the objective of implementing coordinated, pro-active media strategies. Coordinate and conduct basic media and spokesperson training for leaders and allies around immigration reform and civil rights messages.
Qualifications and Requirements: We are looking for an individual who is reliable, good at building relationships, and is a self-starter.
Minimum three years of experience in public relations, media and/or community outreach.
Excellent writing and speaking skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Bilingual (English / Spanish) language capabilities preferred
