The College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences was formed in July 2016, integrating programs in communication; nursing; parks, recreation and tourism management; political science; psychology; public health sciences; sociology, anthropology and criminal justice; and youth, family and community studies. The College is focused on becoming a national and international leader in solving the problems faced by individuals, families, communities and societies. Through its unique combination of departments and schools, the College conducts significant research and outreach and prepares students to understand human behavior, to address health and wellness challenges, and to build stronger and more sustainable communities within a globalized world system.
A successful candidate for Dean will embrace the challenges and opportunities associated with continuing to build one of the premier colleges of Clemson, a highly ranked land grant university, and will possess the skills, leadership, and vision to advance the goals in the ClemsonForward strategic plan. In addition to the conventional job functions described below, the Dean will be expected to: * Design, justify, and implement a visionary strategic plan for CBSHS that aligns with ClemsonForward; * Acquire and manage research and teaching resources, including faculty, staff, and facilities, that align with ClemsonForward; * Dedicate significant time to raise funds for the College in order to yield new resources and opportunities.
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college and reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean holds faculty rank and provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning to help formulate and implement educational policies while serving as the collegiate faculty's agent in the execution of such policies. The Dean serves as the principal internal and external spokesperson for the college as well as for its mission of promoting all areas associated with this college. Performance in office is reviewed at regular intervals by the Provost per the Faculty Manual. The Dean will be responsible for:
* Fiduciary decisions: manage the budget and other resources; * Departmental Administration: appoint department chairs and college administrators, and periodically review the performance of chairs and administrators in concert with the Provost; * Personnel: hiring; establish job titles and salaries; make decisions and review policies regarding renewal, tenure, promotion, and dismissal; authorize faculty leave; review faculty annual evaluations; promote departmental mentoring and development opportunities, and support professional development of faculty and staff; * Educational Leadership: provide leadership and vision for academic programs, considering innovation, cost effectiveness, fidelity to standards and accreditation; establish and maintain high academic standards; ensure effective student quality, recruitment and retention; * Endowment and Outreach: establish a foundation for active and sustainable fund raising; participate in various councils, commissions, and committees as set forth in university policy; represent the college within state and national boards and organizations, and other appropriate groups; * College Governance: create ad hoc committees of the collegiate faculty; hear faculty grievances; promote academic freedom and responsibility; ensure that the college provides a diverse, opportunity and perspective-rich environment; * Diversity and Inclusion: champion diversity and inclusivity among students, faculty and staff; * Effectively demonstrate a commitment to Clemson Core Values and engage the college in the campus, state, national and global communities.
The College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences is one of seven colleges at Clemson University. A recent university reorganization has brought together eight well-established departments offering BA, BS, MA, MS, MPA and PhD degree programs. The College prepares all Clemson University students to become more engaged and healthy life-long learners in their families, their communities and the world. This year the College is expected to have over $3.5M in research expenditures.
Minimum qualifications for this position are an earned doctorate, a distinguished record of achievements that would merit an appointment as professor with tenure in an academic department in the college, and an excellent record of academic leadership and administrative experience.
The successful candidate for Dean will demonstrate outstanding capacity to communicate with a multiple constituencies, provide leadership for the college's broad spectrum of academic activities, an engaging vision for the future of the College, a demonstrated record of recruiting and retaining faculty, a commitment to the principles and practices of shared governance, a strong commitment to diversity, strong fiscal and personnel management skills, an ability to enhance research, and demonstrated success in strengthening philanthropic support from individuals, foundations and corporations, and/or a genuine appetite to engage in such fundraising; and stewardship of such philanthropic support.
