UWMC's EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT has an outstanding opportunity for a PART-TIME PATIENT SERVICES SPECIALIST 1-TRAINEE OR PSS 2 (60%, Day Shifts).The Patient Services Specialist (PSS) is responsible for the transcription of Physician orders assuring completeness, accuracy and timeliness. She/he provides patient focused care through use of customer service strategies; communicates effectively with medical staff, patients, visitors, and other medical center departments to facilitate patient care; and coordinates unit activities by acting as the communications center for the nursing unit: handling all unit paperwork (i.e., including chart maintenance and patient information, etc.), triaging telephone calls, accessing and entering information in computer programs and participates in non-nursing activities. The PSS exercises independence in the planning and accomplishment of a wide spectrum of clerical duties. The PSS maintains inventory of supplies and equipment. She/He partners in the orientation and training of professional and support staff, nursing and medical students, and Patient Services Specialist. These responsibilities are often carried out simultaneously with constant interruption.
Transcription of Physician Orders:
Transcribe physician orders in an accurate and timely manner per transcription procedure standard
Read and understand physician orders
Be knowledgeable of approved abbreviations
Transcribe nursing orders to Kardex accurately and legibly
Note location of transcribed order of Physician Order Sheet by using appropriate abbreviations and by signing name, date, and time completed
Complete appropriate requisitions, schedule tests and appointments as ordered, and meet any necessary deadlines for service or patient
Notify physician or nursing staff when necessary to clarify or complete physician orders in order to facilitate timely patient care
The Patient Services Specialist will be hired as either a 1-Trainee or a 2 depending on experience. The requirements are as follows:
PSS1 Requirements include high school graduation or equivalent AND one year of experience in a health care setting OR two years of general office experience OR equivalent education/experience.
PSS2 Requirements include high school graduation or equivalent AND one year of experience in a health care setting OR three years of general office or customer services experience OR equivalent education/experience.
