The University of Washington Press has an outstanding opportunity for an Intellectual Property Manager. Reporting to the UW Press Chief Financial Officer, the Intellectual Property Manager is responsible for managing and licensing all intellectual property published by the University of Washington Press, in print and digital form.
Primary duties include: contracts administration; managing and marketing subsidiary rights of press published intellectual property; negotiating contracts and licensing agreements with digital content aggregators, eBook vendors, content discovery partners, and other digital service providers; and handling permissions requests, including setting permissions policies and fees.
Description of Responsibilities:
Contracts: Prepare, track, and process all contracts for authors, editors, and contributors to UW Press books as well as co-publication and distribution agreements with press publishing partners. Record rights and royalty terms for all frontlist books in the press-wide database upon receipt of signed contract. On an annual basis and in collaboration with Director, CFO, and Editor in Chief, review and update basic contract templates for authors, editors, co-publications, and distributions.
Co-publications and Distributions: Create metadata for all co-publications and distributions that do not fall under standing blanket agreements. Coordinate with Marketing Department to ensure all title data required for catalog is in place prior to season close. Serve as primary internal and external contact for frontlist co- publications and distributions.
Subsidiary Rights: Market and manage press subsidiary rights. Set subsidiary rights policies and terms. Prepare seasonal advance book information, including tip sheets for the Frankfurt Book Fair (October) and the London Book Fair (April). Negotiate rights for co-publication and translation, as well as subsidiary rights for serialization, audio, film, and other non-print uses. As budget permits, represent the press at national and international book fairs to meet with agents and vendors to buy and sell foreign and translation rights. Provide quarterly reporting of rights and translation sales to the press staff.
Permissions: Manage requests for permission to use material from press publications. Establish and update press permission policies and fees. Manage press relationship with Copyright Clearance Center and other third party rights managers.
Copyright: Apply for copyright registration.
Bachelor's Degree in English, Social Sciences or Humanities; or equivalent combination of education/ experience.
Minimum 2-3 years of experience in scholarly or trade publishing.
Experience managing print and digital rights and permissions.
Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate contracts.
Superior organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and management of FileMaker databases (AllBooks).
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Knowledge of copyright law.
Previous experience as an Intellectual Property Manager or Contract or Rights Manager at a scholarly or trade publisher.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Must be able to travel as needed, nationally and internationally.
