The Theory Department at Princeton University's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks a full time Computational Physicist/Scientist to participate in the US national Exascale Computing Project "Co design Center for Particle Applications (CoPA)," sponsored by Department of Energy. The research effort aims at improving all aspects of particle simulations as the computing platforms advance beyond the 10 to 100 PF level and towards exascale. The main code to improve at PPPL is the XGC gyrokinetic edge particle-in-cell code, and to apply it for scientific discovery on worlds large computers that has not been possible before.
The project work will include a close collaboration among multi-area application scientists including magnetic fusion scientists, astrophysics scientists, material scientists, applied mathematicians, and computer scientists, as well as the software and hardware developers. Prior knowledge of large-scale particle simulation methods and high performance computing is an advantage, which includes MPI, OpenMP, Cuda, OpenACC, data alignment and communication, performance optimization, or scalable algorithm. Training in the computational science and physics by national expert team members will be available.
Ph.D. in physics, computer science, applied mathematics or plasma sciences is required.
English communication and writing skills are required.
Able to work in a large, distributed group.
