Job Requisition Number: 24423. The UC Berkeley Library provides scholarly information to all faculty and students in the support of the University's research and instruction mission. The Library Applications & Publishing Group (LAP) provides technical support for Library, including developing, purchasing and/or supporting all types of hardware platforms and software applications. LAP has primary responsibility for supporting and building UC Berkeley Library’s Integrated Library System (ILS), Digital Library, and web presence.
The UC Berkeley Library is a leader in the investigation and implementation of advanced digital library services. Areas of current work include scalable digital library system architectures, developing efficient methods for creating digital library content, the long-term preservation of digital materials, and standards for digital objects, digitization, and archival collection descriptions. The Web Publishing Group (WPG) supports digital library activities by providing managerial and technical analysis, writing programs to create digital content, writing, enhancing, and maintaining tools to publish, create, and manage digital objects, and training staff for projects that add content to our digital library.
This position is one of a team of digital imaging staff. They will be working on short and long term digital projects dealing with a range of media. They will be responsible for the inception, implementation, and completion of digital projects, which includes the creation of master images and derivatives.
•Use various types of equipment to make digital images, including flatbed scanners, document feed scanner, microfilm scanner, and digital (DLSR) camera. •Use various types software for imaging processing •Perform digital image capture from a range of Library materials to very exacting standards, consistently and productively •Organize and inspect captured image files •Handle rare or fragile originals skillfully to prevent damage •Process files to create master tiffs and PDFs •Transfer files to Library servers for preservation and access •Deliver files and related technical metadata to next stage of workflow •Communicate and coordinate with other team members and clients •Coordinate and track work including delivery, scanning, processing, and producing final product•Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs. •Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing. •Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. •Working skills to analyze information and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail. •Must be self motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills. •Ability to function effectively in an environment of competing priorities, balancing important tasks, urgent tasks, and ongoing maintenance •Ability to monitor project work flow on multiple projects simultaneously from commencement to completion. •Understanding of image capture production methods and equipment and ability to use this information to troubleshoot systems. •Attention to detail and very good organizational skills •Excellent fine-motor coordination, e.g., to handle fragile paper-based originals •Photographic skills: camera and lighting setup, alignment, composing, focus, exposure, Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw •Flatbed scanning skills: file formats, capture resolution, color management This is a 2-year contract appointment with full UC benefits.
